UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State baseball junior catcher Matt Maloney was named to the Buster Posey Award Watch List on Thursday. The award honors the nation's top Division I catcher.
Maloney has played in 26 games this season, including 24 starts. He is batting .295 with 26 hits, including eight doubles and one homer, 28 RBI and 16 runs. He also has 11 walks and one stolen base. As a catcher, Maloney has a .994 fielding percentage and has thrown out six runners attempting to steal.
The junior is currently riding a 13-game reached base streak and owns six multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games this season.
In Big Ten games, Maloney has nine hits, including four doubles, six RBI and six runs.
Maloney collected Big Ten Player of the Week honors after opening weekend this season after tallying five hits and 11 RBI in three games.
He had two hits and four RBI against Monmouth (2/16), two hits and three RBI against Army (2/17) and a homer and four RBI against Army (2/18).
Maloney recorded two RBI in each game against UMass Lowell on March 14 and March 16 and followed with a double and three RBI against St. Bonaventure on March 19.
In the Michigan series (3/22-24), he doubled among two hits and drove in three runs.
In the series finale at Illinois (3/30), Maloney had three hits, including an RBI double.
He had three hits, including a double, and two runs in the Northwestern series (4/5-4/7).
Maloney added a two-run double at Indiana (4/13).
The Buster Posey Award will name its semifinalists on May 22 and its finalists on June 6. The award will be presented on June 26 at the Greater Wichita Sports Banquet.
The Nittany Lions, coached by Mike Gambino, are 18-15 overall and 5-7 in Big Ten play going into Friday's series opener at Michigan State. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network at 8 p.m.
