B.J. and P.J. Werzyn, along with their partners at West Shore Home, are setting a new standard for how philanthropy and innovation can shape the future of our University and its students for years to come.”

Once completed, the Beaver Stadium Revitalization project will also create additional revenue to benefit all 31 sports programs at University Park while simultaneously fostering economic growth across the region.

Beaver Stadium in 2025

Construction continues on the Beaver Stadium Revitalization project with work currently being undertaken on both the East and West sides of the stadium. Micropiling has begun on the West side of the stadium in preparation for the construction of the PAM Health Misitano Family Tower, suite levels, expanded concourses and elevator/stair towers on the perimeter. In addition, 7,900 temporary bleacher seats will be installed on top of the suite level, along with temporary concession and restroom amenities for the season. On the East side, expansion of the main concourse is under way as well as critical maintenance projects to repair some of the aging elements of the stadium.

The Revitalized Beaver Stadium

The completed revitalization will offer a new mix of seating options for Penn State fans, including non-premium seats, located in the lower and upper level, accounting for approximately 75% of seating on the West side. The West side will also include a variety of premium seating options and amenities in line with modern stadiums around the world. The premium spaces will include suites, the Schuyler Family Club, the Marzano Club and loge boxes. The Lubert Family Welcome Center, Schuyler Family Club and Marzano Club will also offer year-round opportunities for private events.

The Beaver Stadium Revitalization has entered its next phase of work on the west side of the stadium. Following the 2024 football season, demolition began with the felling of the press box and removal of the upper deck and several ground level structures. Once completed prior to the 2027 season, the Beaver Stadium Revitalization will transform the fan and community experience and fuel the funding for all 31 athletics programs at Penn State in addition to growing revenue-generating opportunities.

“We are thrilled to share our plans for the west side of our Beaver Stadium Revitalization,” said Pat Kraft, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics. “The improvements we made on the east side following the 2023 season have enhanced fan experience and circulation throughout the building.

Our next phase will modernize the west side of Beaver Stadium while maintaining its historic roots. As we continue to make these changes, we only further enhance our stadium, making it one of the most intimidating places to play in the country! This project is not just a project for football, it is one that will impact all 31 sports teams at Penn State, our campus community and the Centre Region for years to come.”

Beaver Stadium Revitalization Plan

In May 2024, the Penn State Board of Trustees approved investing in the renovation of Beaver Stadium. The approved renovations will enable year-round use of Beaver Stadium, further driving economic growth and development in the surrounding region.

During the Beaver Stadium Revitalization, there will be 800-1,000 unique tradespeople working on the project each summer and 450 workers on site daily at the peak of the project. These jobs will generate $15 million in economic impact for the region and the first phase of the project saw 75% of the materials and labor procured from Pennsylvania. The project architect is global design firm Populous with its extensive experience in designing sports and entertainment venues. The construction management team is a tri-venture of Barton Malow, AECOM Hunt and Alexander Construction with Nations Group serving as a key consultant in this effort. These companies have a history of working together on multiple athletic facilities over the past 20-plus years.

To date, the project has seen incredible support, led by the $25 million commitment from the Misitano Family and PAM Health. The gift to name the West Tower from the Misitano family and PAM Health is the second-largest in Penn State Athletics history. Athletics also received transformational gifts from Ira Lubert and his wife, Pam Estadt, to name the Lubert Family Welcome Center, Jennifer and Frank Marzano to name the Marzano Club, as well as Matt and Anne Schuyler to name the Schuyler Family Club. Athletics has also received two $10 million gifts from donors who wish to remain anonymous, as well as a $5 million contribution from Playfly Sports.

Beaver Stadium in 2025

Following the 2024 football season, the press box and the west side upper bowl were demolished to clear the path for the construction on the PAM Health Misitano Family Tower, Schuyler Family Club, Marzano Club and suites levels. In addition, 7,900 temporary bleacher seats will be installed on top of the suite level, and there will be temporary concession and restroom amenities for the season.

Seating and Parking Impacts in 2025

It is expected Beaver Stadium will maintain a capacity of more than100,000 throughout the renovation project. Football game day parking and tailgating are not anticipated to be limited during the stadium construction period, however there may be minimal impacts across the construction site. The construction footprint will be expanded during the off-season but will shrink to accommodate football game day parking in-season.

Beaver Stadium’s Revitalized West Side

The project will encompass the next three football off-seasons and will see enhancements in all aspects of the game day experience. Improved amenities, such as restrooms and concessions as well as improvement in Wi-Fi with 135 new wireless access points and an increased Wi-Fi capacity. An increased number of concourses, including a Field Level Concourse, Main Concourse and Upper Concourse will more than double the space of the previous concourses on the west side. The revitalization will increase vertical fan circulation as well with the addition of escalators, elevators, and pedestrian ramps. In addition, stadium lighting will be replaced to enhance game day presentation, as will the upgraded north videoboard and new ribbon boards on the west side intermediate and upper bowls. In alignment with Penn State’s commitment to global sustainability, the Beaver Stadium Revitalization will be designed with a high standard for energy efficiency, construction and eventual operation of the stadium with a commitment to achieving LEED certification.

The completed revitalization will offer a new mix of seating options, with the vast majority – approximately 75% - of seating on the revitalized west side being non-premium seats, located in the lower and upper levels. The west side will also include a variety of premium seating options and amenities more in line with modern stadiums. The premium spaces will include suites, the 20,000-square foot Schuyler Family Club, the 35,000-square foot Marzano Club, and loge boxes. The Schuyler Family Club and Marzano Club will also offer a year-round opportunity for private events.

“Beaver Stadium is home to the best fans in the country, who have created the best environment in college football," said James Franklin, Penn State head football coach. “These renovations will give Nittany Nation the opportunity to continue bringing the home field advantage in new and improved spaces. We are excited for the impact these renovations will have on our athletics department, the University and our community."

The iconic Beaver Stadium press box was demolished on Saturday, January 4. The demolition of the Beaver Stadium Press Box is the start to a large-scale demolition of the upper West side of Beaver Stadium as part of the Beaver Stadium Revitalization. There will be workers on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the six weeks to demo, clear and prep the area for the construction that will take place prior to the 2025 season.

The Beaver Stadium press box, which was original to New Beaver Field, was disassembled and moved from New Beaver Field to Beaver Stadium following the 1959 season, along with the grandstands. The press box was expanded to its current configuration in 1980 with additions on either side of the original press box to nearly double its size.

2024 Updates

On Thursday, December 19, the Barton Malow-AECOM Hunt-Alexander team formalized a strategic partnership with the Harrisburg office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) on the Penn State University Beaver Stadium renovation project to reaffirm the tri-venture’s commitment to safety at all levels of the project.

"This partnership underscores our commitment to the highest safety standards on the Beaver Stadium renovation project,” said Alexander Project Executive Mike Sgriccia. “By working closely with OSHA and our partners, we aim to set a benchmark for safety and collaboration in construction.”

OSHA’s Strategic Partnership Program (OSPP) is a national program that provides opportunities for OSHA to partner with employers, workers, professional or trade associations, labor organizations, and other interested stakeholders. The partnership outlines specific goals, strategies, and measures to enhance workplace safety. These include reducing injuries and illnesses, mitigating workplace hazards, conducting thorough self-inspections, providing effective training, and fostering strong working relationships with on-site contractors.

"Safety is the foundation of everything our teams do,” said AECOM Hunt Project Director Patrick Wipperman. “Partnering with OSHA allows us to enhance our safety protocols and create an environment where every team member feels confident that their well-being is prioritized.”

The agreement highlights the critical role of collaboration among OSHA, the tri-venture partners, and contractors in achieving these safety objectives.

“Signing this strategic partnership represents more than compliance. It’s a shared commitment to protecting the people who are bringing this historic project to life,” said Scott Mull, Barton Malow Senior Director of Pennsylvania Operations. “Together, we’re not just revitalizing Beaver Stadium but also redefining what safety excellence looks like in our industry.”

About the Project

The planned renovations to Beaver Stadium aim to extend the life of the historic venue while enhancing the fan experience and upgrading the facilities to meet top-tier standards within the collegiate conferences. The tri-venture completed maintenance work on the East side of the stadium and video board upgrades at the North and South ends before the start of the 2024 season. Major construction on the stadium’s west side is set to begin in early 2025 and is projected to be completed before the start of the Nittany Lions’ 2027 football season. Additional details and construction updates are available on the Penn State Athletics website.

Construction is underway for the early revitalization projects of West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium

Current ongoing projects are focusing on providing specific improvements on the East side and end zones of the stadium that will be in effect for the 2024 season. In addition to these projects, there have been a number of improvements to the winterization of the stadium to allow for hosting events in the winter months. These projects include the expansion of Gates A and E, the enhancement of Gate F and South end zone videoboard improvements.

Expansion of Gates A and E

  • Located in the southeast (Gate A) and northeast (Gate E) corners of West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium, the expansion of Gates A and E will improve fan circulation on the field level, as well as the East side of the stadium.
  • Four additional escalators, two each at Gates A and E, are being installed for enhanced vertical circulation on the East side of the stadium.
  • With expanded corner space will come an increase of concession stands with additional points of sale and restrooms available to fans.

Enhancement of Gate F

  • Outside of Gate F, located on the East side of West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium, will feature an open-air space at the stadium where fans can enjoy food and drink options and an entertainment space.
  • Gate F will create additional fan entry points, allowing for enhanced circulation by expanding the stadium’s security perimeter.
  •  The enhancement of Gate F will also increase concession opportunities with more locations and offerings.

Videoboard Improvements

  • The South end video board is being replaced with a new videoboard with improved resolution.
  • Ribbon boards located at the North and South ends are being replaced and will increase in size.
  • A new ribbon board on the South end will be installed to complement the updated, existing ribbon board and the new super ribbon board.
  • There will also be the addition of a super ribbon board, located at the very top of the upper bowl of the South end.

Operational enhancements will be announced prior to the 2024 home opener.

All gates, South videoboard and ribbon boards will be operational in time for the 2024 Penn State Football home season. Escalators and super ribbon boards will be unveiled during the 2024 home season. Future revitalization phases will commence following the 2024 season and will take place through the summer of 2027.

On May 21, 2024, the Penn State Board of Trustees approved investing in the renovation of West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium, which will grow revenue-generating opportunities, transform the fan and community experience, and fuel the future funding for all 31 athletics programs at Penn State. The approved renovations will enable year-round use of West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium, further driving economic growth and development in the surrounding region.

Since January 2024, when the initial expenditure ($70M) for the West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium renovation was approved, steps have been underway at the stadium and will continue leading up to the 2024 college football season. Initial construction has prioritized safety and accessibility through the widening of select concourses and the installation of new escalators, as well as field lighting performance and videoboard replacements. Winterization work also is ongoing, which entails the insulation of pipes and other upgrades to allow the building to be occupied when temperatures are below freezing, giving Penn State the ability to host a College Football Playoff game beginning in 2024 and other potential events beyond Penn State football games in the winter months.
