UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; August 10, 2024 – Penn State Olympic RTC/NLWC Resident Athlete Kyle Dake rallied late to win a second Olympic Bronze Medal in Paris, France. Dake capped off his tournament with a 10-4 win in the Bronze Medal round at 74 kg. In addition, former Lion great Zain Retherford began action at 65 kg and PSRTC/NLWC Resident Athlete Kyle Snyder started at 97 kg. Both men are still alive for Bronze Medals.
Dake met Hetik Cabolov of Serbia in his Bronze Medal match at 74 kg. Dake battled Cabolov close into the second period before falling behind 4-1 with :31 left. He then exploded for nine points in the final half-minute to post the 10-4 win. The Bronze is the second straight for Dake, having won the same in the 2020 games.
Retherford (65 kg) drew the second-seed Rahman Amouzadkhalili of Iran in his first match at the Olympics and dropped an 8-0 decision. Amouzadkhalili rolled to a tech superiority win in his semifinal match, pulling Retherford into the repechage on Sunday morning, still alive for a Bronze Medal.
Snyder (97 kg) came back from an early deficit to roll over China’s AwusayimanC Habila, 9-5, in the first round. He then took on Cuba’s Arturo Silot Torres in the quarters. Snyder turned a 1-0 lead at the break into a four-point throw and a pin to win and advance to the semifinals.
In the semis, Snyder met Bahrain’s Akhmed Tazhudinov. Snyder fell behind 2-1 after one, tried to rally late in the second but dropped a tough 6-4 decision. The loss sends Snyder to the Bronze Medal round Sunday morning.
Retherford and Snyder will close out the Olympic Games tomorrow on Aug. 11, both seeking Bronze medals, starting at 5 a.m.
Aaron Brooks won Olympic Bronze on Friday afternoon at 86 kg. Roman Bravo-Young competed at 57 kg for Mexico and did not advance to the medal round.
