UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 12/13 Penn State women's ice hockey team heads to Columbus, Ohio for the 2024 Women’s Ice Breaker Tournament which is hosted by Ohio State.

The Nittany Lions will face Cornell in round one on Friday, October 25 at 12 p.m. Penn State will then face either the winner or loser of the Ohio State vs. Stonehill game on Saturday, October 26 at either 1 p.m. or 4 p.m.

HISTORY  

Penn State is facing Cornell for the seventh time in program history. Cornell currently leads the series 3-1-2 with the last meeting occurring on October 14, 2023, when Penn State fell to the Big Red 5-2.

The Nittany Lions could be facing Ohio State in the second game of the tournament for just the 12th time in program history. Ohio State currently leads the all-time series 9-2. The last time the two teams met was on November 27, 2021 where the Nittany Lions fell 4-2. 

If the Nittany Lions face Stonehill, it'll be the first time in program history the two teams have ever met. 

SCOUTING THE FIELD

Cornell enters the tournament with an 0-1-1 overall record. They recently faced AHA rival Mercyhurst on October 18-19 where they tied 0-0 in game one and lost in game two 2-1. Their leading goal scorer is sophomore Karel Profontaine who has one goal on the year. 

Stonehill enters the tournament with a 1-6-0 overall record and 1-3-0 record in NEWHA play. They are coming off a dropping a pair of games to Sacred Heart on October 18-19 where they fell 4-3 and 2-0. The leading point getter for the Skyhawks is Bailey Feeney who has four points off one goal and three assists. 

Ohio State enters the Ice Breaker with a 6-2-2 overall record and 4-2-2 WCHA record. They are coming off a 5-1 victory over Mercyhurst on October 22. Leading the offense for the Buckeyes is Jenna Buglioni who leads the team with 13 points off eight goals and five assists. 

 

LEADING THE POINTS GAME

Juniors Tessa Janecke and Katelyn Roberts sit in first and second place in the AHA in points per game. 

Janecke averages 1.38 which sits first while Roberts averages 1.13 points per game which sits second in the league. 

Nationally, Janecke sits 26th in points per game while Roberts sits 41st. 

On the year, Roberts tallies four goals and five assists for nine points while Janecke has recorded five goals and six assists for 11 points. 

LEAPING OUT-OF-THE-WATER  

Freshman Grace Outwater was named AHA Forward of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Outwater picked up her first career AHA weekly honor after she scored her first collegiate goals in Saturday's 4-1 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday. 

Outwater accomplished her first multi-goal game of her career and first collegiate points of her career. She tallied the most goals of any Penn State player this week and led all freshman in points and goals. 

On the year, she leads all Penn State rookies in points, goals and assists with two goals and three assists for five points. She is the first Nittany Lion freshman to win a weekly award this year.

HOME ICE ADVANTAGE

Penn State currently sits fourth in the nation in average and total attendance. 

In Saturday's game against Dartmouth, Penn State hit the 10th highest attendance in program history at 1,404. 

The Nittany Lions are averaging just under 1,000 people per game at (921) while having a total attendance of 3,685.
