SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Tessa Janecke broke a historical record by becoming the program’s career points leader in Penn State women’s hockey’s 4-0 shutout win on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grace Outwater stole the puck from a Syracuse defender in the neutral zone and ripped a short-handed goal in the slot to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead with 10:37 remaining in the first period.
- Katelyn Roberts fed Tessa Janecke the puck on the right side in the offensive zone, and Janecke launched the puck into the net from the circle to put Penn State ahead 2-0 with 17:47 left in the second frame.
- Brianna Brooks stole the puck from a Syracuse defender in the offensive zone and she then fed it to Nicole Hall. She then shot the puck into the net from the top left circle to put Penn State ahead 3-0 with 1:43 left in the second period.
- Outwater sealed the game with a goal in the slot after receiving a feed from Maddy Christian on the left side with 14:48 left in the third period to put Penn State ahead 4-0.
GOALTENDERS
- Junior goalie Katie DeSa tallied 25 saves on the day. Her record improves to 18-4-0 in the year. She picked up her sixth shutout win of the season and ninth career shutout win.
- Syracuse goalie Allie Kelley recorded 23 saves on 27 shots attempted. Her record drops to 6-19-0 on the year.
- Syracuse goalie Bella Gould came in the game in the second frame and recorded one save.
STATS AND NOTES
- Penn State captured their eighth straight win of the season.
- This is the seventh shutout win for the Nittany Lions and the second time Penn State has shutout a team in both games of a series.
- With her goal, Janecke now becomes the all-time program career points leader with 138.
- Outwater scored her first collegiate short-handed goal, making this the fifth short-handed goal of the year for the Nittany Lions.
- She also tallied her fourth multi-goal game of the year with two on the day.
- Kendall Butze played in her 100th career game as a Nittany Lion.
- The Nittany Lions are a perfect 12-0 in Atlantic Hockey America play, which is the only team in the country to hold a perfect record in conference play this season.
- Syracuse leads the all-time series 31-16-8.
