ROSEMONT, Ill. – Penn State men’s gymnast Matt Underhill was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week the conference offices announced Tuesday afternoon. The honor is the first of the season for the junior.
The Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, native posted his fourth consecutive rings’ event title with a 14.100, his second score of the season above 14.000. The score was tied for the fifth highest of any gymnast this season. For his efforts in the meet against William & Mary, he was named the event’s Gene Wettstone award winner, which highlights the most outstanding athlete of the meet.
Underhill ranks third in the country as a still rings’ gymnast. He averages a score of 13.912 across the season, and his 14.200 that he tallied against Army West Point is the third highest score in the NCAA this year.
Underhill and the rest of the Penn State men’s gymnastics hosts to Michigan for the Big Ten opener on Saturday, February 1 at 4 p.m. in Rec Hall. The action will be streamed live via B1G+.
