Game Notes: No. 3/2 Penn State vs. No. 6/5 Oregon

No. 3/2 Penn State football welcomes No. 6/5 Oregon to West Shore Home Field At Beaver Stadium on Saturday for the Penn State White Out Game. Kickoff is set for at 7:30 p.m. on NBC.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 3/2 Penn State meets No. 6/5 Oregon in a Top-10 matchup for the Penn State White Out Game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on NBC.

SERIES HISTORY: Penn State meets Oregon for the sixth time in program history and just the third time in a regular-season matchup. The Ducks will visit Happy Valley for the first time since 1964. The Nittany Lions lead the all-time series, 3-2, but fell 45-37 in the 2024 Big Ten Championship Game. Kaytron Allen (124 yards) and Nicholas Singleton (105) both rushed for 100+ yards, while Allen added a rushing touchdown.

PENN STATE WHITEOUT: The Nittany Lions are set to host their 18th full-stadium Penn State White Out. The tradition began with a student section White Out in 2004 and expanded to a full-stadium White Out against Notre Dame in 2007. Penn State holds an 11-6 record when the full stadium wears white. Saturday's matchup will mark just the second White Out with both teams ranked among the AP Top 10, joining the 2018 game between No. 9 Penn State and No. 4 Ohio State.

DOMINATING DEFENSE: After recording a shutout against FIU, the Nittany Lions held Villanova without a point until a touchdown on the final play of the game. PSU held opponents scoreless for seven-straight quarters. On the season, Penn State sits third in the country in scoring defense (5.7), third in red zone defense (50.0), ninth in total defense (224.0) and 12th in passing defense (123.3). The Nittany Lions sit 13th in takeaways (7), fourth in tackles for loss per game (9.7) and 16th in sacks per game (3.0).

ALLEN, SINGLETON AMONG ACTIVE RUSHING LEADERS: Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton combined for 170 rushing yards and three touchdowns against Villanova, adding to their impressive career totals. Allen (3,150) and Singleton (3,091) are second and third among current FBS players in career rushing yards. Singleton leads current FBS players in rushing touchdowns (37), total touchdowns (46) and all-purpose yards (4,896), while Allen is sixth in rushing touchdowns (27).

THE OPPOSITION: Oregon is 4-0 this season (1-0 in Big Ten) after a 41-7 win over Oregon State. The Ducks gained 585 yards. Dante Moore threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, to four different receivers. Oregon's defense limited the Beavers to 147 yards and eight first downs.

 

BY THE NUMBERS

104 - Head Coach James Franklin earned his 104th win at Penn State, tying Rip Engle (1950-65) for second all-time at PSU.

26 - With 26 wins as Penn State's starting quarterback, Drew Allar ranks second among current FBS quarterbacks in career wins and has the most wins among current FBS quarterbacks at their original school.

VILLANOVA NOTES

  • Head Coach James Franklin earned his 104th win at Penn State, tying Rip Engle (104; 1950-65) for second all-time at Penn State.
  • QB Ethan Grunkemeyer and TE Joey Schlaffer (19-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter) are the first Penn State teammates to combine on their first career touchdown pass and first career reception as a touchdown reception since Drew Allar and Omari Evans against Ohio in 2022.
  • Penn State held opponents scoreless for seven-straight quarters until Villanova’s touchdown as time expired. This marked the first time since 2019 that the Nittany Lions have shut out an opponent for seven consecutive quarters.
  • CB Jahmir Joseph picked off a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown. He is the first Nittany Lion with an interception return for a touchdown this season and the first Nittany Lion with an interception return for a touchdown since Dominic DeLuca (23 yards) and Tony Rojas (59 yards) against SMU in 2024.

 

SERIES HISTORY VS. OREGON

  • Penn State and Oregon will meet for the sixth time with PSU holding a 3-2 advantage.
  • This will be the third regular season meeting between the schools and the second meeting in West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium.
  • The Nittany Lions won the 1960 Liberty Bowl (41-12) and 1995 Rose Bowl (38-20), while adding a regular-season road win in 1963 (17-7).
  • Oregon picked up wins in 1964 (22-14), at Beaver Stadium, and in the 2024 Big Ten Championship Game (45-37).
