UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women’s ice hockey team skated to a dominant 6-1 win to complete the sweep of No. 15 Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Six minutes into the first period Maddy Christian received a pass from Danica Maynard and curled around the net, shooting it and hitting the cross bar. It popped out to an open Grace Outwater who found the back of the net.
- With over a minute to go in the first period, Katelyn Roberts intercepted a pass in the defensive zone and skated it forward, shooting it over the Mercyhurst goaltender’s shoulder.
- Nine seconds later, Nicole Hall won a faceoff back to Kendall Butze who lifted a puck into the offensive zone where Maddy Christian found it and shot into the open net and scored.
- Just under seven minutes into the third period, Kendall Butze passed it to Tessa Janecke on the right offensive dot who backhanded it to Mikah Keller in front of the net and she backhanded it in.
- Over 15 minutes into the third, Tessa Janecke attempted to pass it cross crease to Katelyn Roberts and it found its way through the Mercyhurst goaltender’s pads into the net.
- Almost exactly a minute later, Mikah Keller intercepted a breakout pass and found Grace Outwater on a 2-on-1 with a cross crease pass and she netted her second goal of the game.
- With 31 seconds to play, Nayeon Kim of Mercyhurst took a shot and Regin Metzler buried the rebound.
GOALTENDERS
- Senior goaltender Katie DeSa made 16 saves for her seventh win of the season.
- Mercyhurst played two goaltenders this afternoon with Tara Bach getting the start and allowing three goals on eight saves. Magdelena Luggin came in to play the second third periods, making 22 saves.
STATS AND NOTES
- Katelyn Roberts and Maddy Christian’s goals were nine seconds apart which is the fastest back-to-back goals in program history.
- Penn State improves to 24-26-9 against Mercyhurst all-time.
- Tessa Janecke had a goal and an assist to push her point streak to nine games.
- Kendall Butze had her first multi-assist game of the season and seventh of her career.
- Danica Maynard added an assist to bring her point total to 13, sitting fourth nationally and first among all freshman.
- Maynard also currently leads the nation with a +17.
- It is the third time this season that the Nittany Lions had five different goal scorers in a game.
- This is Penn State’s fourth win over a ranked team this season, the most in a single season in program history.

- Penn State will be back at Pegula Ice Arena next Friday afternoon to begin a two-game series against Lindenwood. Friday’s game is slated for 2 p.m. while Saturday’s game is set for 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed on B1G+.
