Penn State women’s basketball travels to Indiana on Saturday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State women’s basketball concludes the regular season at Indiana on Saturday, Feb. 28. The Lady Lions (11-17, 4-13 Big Ten) face off against the Hoosiers (16-13, 5-12 Big Ten) as they compete for a spot in the Big Ten Tournament. Tip off inside Assembly Hall is slated for 2 p.m. with coverage on B1G+.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State earned its third-straight win on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The Lady Lions downed USC 85-82 on senior night inside Rec Hall. The Trojans owned has large as a 12-point lead at 5:26 in the third frame before PSU came charging back. Kiyomi led the comeback with her 40-point performance but big buckets from Gracie Merkle and key rebounds from Nyla McFadden gave Penn State a chance to claw back. McMiller had the final go-ahead bucket at 3:26 in the fourth quarter and Moriah Murray drained a character three-pointer to widen the gap to four. USC attempted to climb back over the final minutes, but were unsuccessful, finalizing the Lady Lion win.
  • McMiller guided Penn State offensively with 40 points in her sixth consecutive 30-point game, marking the first time a women’s college basketball player has produced six-straight 30-point games since Caitlin Clark in 2023-24. Her 40 points and seven made triples are new career highs for the sophomore and her scoring performance is the best of a Lady Lion in a Big Ten game since Kelly Mazzante scored 49 against Minnesota on Dec. 28, 2001. McMiller also surpassed 1,000 points in the outing.
  • Merkle had an efficient night in the paint, producing 15 points on seven-of-eight shooting.
  • McFadden had her fifth double figure scoring outing of the season with 10 points on four-of-five shooting from the field and two-of-two shooting from the free throw line.
  • As a team, the Lady Lions shot above 60.0% from the floor for the second consecutive game and shot about 55.0% from the field and from three-point range for the second-straight contest.

SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS

  • Indiana is 16-13, 5-12 Big Ten this year. The Hoosiers are also fighting for a their spot in the Big Ten Tournament with a win over Rutgers on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
  • Former Lady Lion, Shay Ciezki leads IU offensively, averaging 23.0 points per game. Lenee Beaumont (13.4) and Zania Socka-Nguemen (11.8) both average double figure scoring as well.
  • Ciezki leads the conference in minutes per game (35.26) and three-point percentage (46.3). She ranks second in points per game (23.0), points (645), three-pointers (75), three-pointers per game (2.68) and free throw percentage (90.6). Her three-point percentage is good for fifth in the nation while her points rank sixth and points per game are seventh. She has secured three Big Ten Player of the Week honors throughout the campaign.
  • As a team, the Hoosiers are fourth in the country in three-point percentage (38.0), eighth in free throw percentage (79.2) and 15th in field goal percentage (47.2).
  • Last season, Indiana finished 20-13, 10-8 overall. After falling to USC in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament, the Hoosiers made a run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they lost to South Carolina.
