University Park, Pa. - After snapping their two-game losing streak with an exciting, come-from-behind 4-3 win over Lock Haven on Wednesday, the Nittany Lion field hockey team will look to make it two straight in the W column as it opens its home Big Ten schedule on Sunday by hosting Northwestern. Game time is at noon on AstroTurf Field.
The Nittany Lions (6-4, 0-1 Big Ten) will have their Big Ten home opener as their final game in September for the second straight year. Last season, Penn State topped Michigan 4-0 on the second-to-last day of September in their conference home opener. Sunday's game will be the second of a three-game homestand, which will wrap up next Wednesday against Syracuse. Penn State has won its final game in the month of September in each of the last six seasons.
Northwestern (3-5, 0-1 Big Ten) will enter Sunday's game on a four-game losing streak after starting the year 3-1. Penn State has won its last 14 consecutive meetings with the Wildcats dating all the way back to 1997. This current streak is the fourth-longest current streak for the Nittany Lions against a single opponent. Penn State has won 26 straight over Bucknell, 20 over West Chester, and 15 straight over Penn.
Four different Nittany Lions scored goals in Wednesday's game, including Amy Bonenberger, who scored her first career goal, and Britney Long, who netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Penn State has scored just 23 goals on the year, which is sixth in the Big Ten, however Northwestern has given up a conference-high 29.
