University Park, Pa. - Penn State field hockey goalkeeper Jen Beaumont was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for this week after recording her third shutout of the season in Penn State's 5-0 win over Northwestern on Sunday, helping the Nittany Lions win their Big Ten home opener and even their Big Ten record at 1-1 on the year. This is the second career Big Ten weekly award for the junior keeper out of Chalfont, Pa.
Beaumont, who earlier this year along with the Penn State defense had a career-long streak of 286:25 straight minutes without allowing a goal, made two saves on Northwestern's only two shots of the game on Sunday, both of which came off of penalty corners. Last Wednesday against Lock Haven, after yielding two early goals, Beaumont helped shut the door on the Lock Haven offense as she recorded five saves in the contest and allowed the Nittany Lion offense to score four straight goals to overcome the early two-goal deficit and defeat the Lady Eagles. A senior with junior eligibility, Beaumont was also the league's defensive player of the week last September 25th after recording three straight shutouts.
The Nittany Lions will host Syracuse on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. on AstroTurf Field.
