Georgia Tech Invitational Draw Brackets
University Park, Pa. - Junior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) highlighted the day for the Penn State men's tennis team as he upset the No. 5 seed Bryant Salcedo of Vanderbilt in the "A" Draw of the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday. Gormley squeaked out a win in the first set in a 7-4 tiebreaker and then finished off Salcedo in the second set to take the match, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
"Ryan played a very good competitive match today to upset Salcedo," said Penn State assistant coach Dan Holman. "This is a good win for him, and we look forward to him being ready for his match tomorrow."
With the victory, Gormley advances to meet Calum Gee of Davidson tomorrow in an 8 a.m. match. If Gormley defeats Gee, he would advance to the quarterfinal round which is tomorrow at 1 p.m.
In other singles action, junior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, QC, Canada) defeated Scott Lieberman of Vanderbilt, 6-1, 7-6 (9), in the "B" Draw of singles action. With the victory, St-Maurice will take on the fifth-seed Ryan Ybarra of UNCW tomorrow at 8 a.m., in the round of 16.
Sophomore Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) was eliminated when he lost to No. 1 seed Jamie Hunt of Georgia 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 32 in the "A" Draw for singles.
In doubles action, Gormley and St-Maurice teamed up and fell to Vanderbilt's Adam Baker and Alex Zotov 8-2. Bourchier teamed up with Kevin Fleck of Clemson, but the pair came up short against Georgia's Drake Bernstein and Javier Garrapiz, 8-6.
The Georgia Tech Invitational semifinals and finals for both singles and doubles will take place on Sunday.
Following the Georgia Tech Invitational, the Nittany Lions will participate in the ITA Regionals in New Haven, Conn. on Oct. 16-21. Following that, the Big Ten Indoor Championships will take place on Oct. 30-Nov. 3 in Madison, Wis.
