UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Jay Hosack has been named the assistant coach for the Penn State men's volleyball program, head coach Mark Pavlik announced. Hosack takes over for Craig Dyer who is now an assistant coach with the Marquette women's volleyball program.
"I am excited and honored to become part of the Penn State family," said Hosack. "This program has such history and tradition. I look forward to bringing my skills to the office and team, and helping us become the best we can be. I am very thankful for the people that helped me get here such as Hugh McCutcheon, Tom Pestolesi and Karch Kiraly. They have all been great mentors, colleagues and friends and I would not be here today without them."
"I am truly excited about the addition of Jay to our staff," said Pavlik. "He brings with him a wealth of volleyball knowledge and experience from different levels and coaches of the game. His experience in training individuals and teams will help continue the growth of our program and student-athletes. He will unquestionably add to our staff and the PSU men's volleyball family. Assistant coach Colin McMillan and I are looking forward to working with him."
Most recently, Hosack served as an assistant coach for the women's volleyball program at UC Irvine in 2008-09. He assisted the head coach in recruiting and overall player development and performance. In addition, Hosack also handled scouting reports of opponents and practice plans.
From 2005-08, Hosack served as the associate head coach for both the men's and women's volleyball teams at Irvine Valley College. While at IVC, Hosack helped guide the Lasers men's team to Orange Empire Conference titles in 2005 and 2007 and back-to-back state championships in 2007 and 2008. Hosack earned conference Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2007 and coached the women's program to a conference crown that same year. Hosack also made a mark in the classroom at IVC, teaching Physical Education volleyball courses.
Between 2006-08, Hosack served as an assistant coach with the U.S. Men's National team. His responsibilities included creating effective practice plans, handling team data and assisting with player development in preparation for the 2008 Olympic games.
Hosack served as the head coach for the men's and women's volleyball teams at UC Santa Cruz from 2000-04. He was responsible for day-to-day operations, as well as recruiting and fundraising. While at Santa Cruz, Hosack earned UC Santa Cruz Coach of the Year accolades in 2002 and 2004, guided the men's team to the national semifinals in 2004 and produced the program's first All-American. From there, Hosack spent one season as the assistant coach at Idaho State University.
Hosack also has tremendous experience at the club level and with numerous camps and clinics. He served as head coach of the Orange Coast Volleyball Club 18-1's, the Riptides Orange County Club and the Team Santa Cruz Club. He served as the director for the IVC summer camps, the Aldusal Coaching Clinics in El Salvador and the UC Santa Cruz High Performance Camps among many others.
Hosack received his bachelor's degree in sociology at UC Santa Cruz and earned a Masters of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University in June of 2009.
