UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. --The Penn State women's soccer team snapped its five-game skid in emphatic fashion with a 5-1 thrashing of Bucknell on Wednesday night at Jeffrey Field. Maya Hayes (West Orange, N.J.) scored a first half goal before PSU unleashed a four-goal second-half barrage. Danielle Toney (Northville, Mich.) led the Lions with two goals, while freshman Taylor Schram (Canonsburg, Pa.) notched three points in the second half.
Penn State's Jess Rosenbluth (Gladwyne, Pa.) and Christine Nairn (Arnold, Md.) had early chances on net were easily saved by Bucknell `keeper Sandita McDermott (seven saves), a foreshadowing to the pressure the Bison would see all night.
The Nittany Lions (2-5-1) finally broke through in the 25th minute when Hayes took a Nairn pass down the left flank and slotted it home on the near post for the 1-0 lead. The Nittany Lions went into the halftime with the lead for the first time of the year after out-shooting the Bison (1-7-0) by a 13-3 margin.
In the second half, the pressure by Penn State was reasserted and PSU scored just five minutes into the frame. Bri Hovington sent a well-placed cross to the center of the goal mouth that was tipped by Nairn before Schram slammed it home for her first career tally and a 2-0 Penn State lead in the 51st minute. The assist was Hovington's first collegiate point.
Penn State would pour on the scoring just four minutes later when Toney scored the first of her two goals on a Nairn through ball and slotted it home into the right side of the net for a 3-0 margin. Toney added her fourth goal of the season in the 61st minute when she took a right footed shot to the far post after a brilliant ball over the top by Rosenbluth.
The Nittany Lions suffered one of their few miscues of the night when a pass back to reserve goalkeeper Kristin Hartmann (Katy, Texas) was misplayed by Hartmann and Bucknell striker Christa Matlack put away her fourth goal of the season in the 71st minute.

Penn State would avenge the Bison goal when Hayley Brock (Acton, Mass.) sprinted down the left flank past two Bucknell defenders. She then scooted to the left of the diving goalkeeper Colleen Garrehy and shot into an open net in the 76th minute for a 5-1 lead and her third goal of the year.
The win snapped a five game losing streak for Penn State, while the Bison continued their skid to six games. In the series the Lions now lead Bucknell 14-0-1 all-time, while Penn State's mark against Pennsylvania teams to 29-2-1 all-time. The Nittany Lions are now unbeaten against Keystone State foes in their last 24 games dating back to 1997.
The two goals by Toney was the first time she tallied multiple scores in the same game since a 4-0 win over Purdue on Nov. 1, 2009. Additionally, the 15 points Penn State tallied were the most since the Nittany Lions posted 16 against Colgate on Nov. 13, 2009. Penn State is now 25-3-2 all-time when Toney tallies a goal.
