UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Assistant Director of Penn State's Morgan Academic Support Center for Student Athletes, Sandy Meyer, recently received the Lan Hewlett Award from the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A). The award was presented to Meyer at the N4A's annual convention, which was held in Salt Lake City in July.
The award is given to the advisor who has demonstrated a sustained professional service in collegiate student-athlete advising, a high level of competency in administrative skills, merited stature among and support from student-athletes, faculty, coaches and fellow administrators, as well as providing leadership in university affairs. Meyer has been serving as an advisor to student-athletes since 1987 when the academic support center was founded and currently works with the men's and women's fencing teams, field hockey, women's swimming and diving and wrestling.
A Penn State secondary education graduate, Meyer serves as Penn State's First-Year Enrichment Coordinator for student-athletes. She has been a member of four NCAA Certification Peer Reviews and is in the midst of a three-year term as chair of the National Association of Academic Advisors (NACADA) Advising Student-Athlete Commission.
Meyer, a past president of N4A, was the first ever recipient of Houghton Mifflin's "Promoting First-Year Student-Athlete Success: Excellence in Instruction Award" in 2005, as well as the N4A's Distinguished Service Award. Before joining the Penn State staff, Meyer taught in Penn State's English Department and at State College Area High School.
