Aug. 18, 2011

ERIN HILLS, Wis. - Junior Jay Woodward will advance to the U.S. Amateur Championship after taking third place at the sectional qualifiers held at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Woodward's hometown of Bridgeport, W.Va., on August 1.

The talented junior came out of the gates strong posting a 2-under-par 70 in the first round. He displayed consistency as he kept even par on the first seven holes followed by a 1-under-par score on the succeeding seven and finishing out with a 2-under-par score on the final four holes. In the afternoon round, Woodward's two birdies and five bogies contributed to his second round score of 75.

In finishing third, Woodward was awarded first alternate, but after a competitor dropped out of the championship, Woodward was able to slide in to his place. The championship will take place Aug. 22-28 in Erin Hills, Wis.
