TULSA, Okla. - Penn State men's tennis players Russell Bader(Austin, Texas) and Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) advanced to the third round of prequalifying singles at the ITA Men's All-American Championships. The tournament is hosted by the University of Tulsa. On Saturday, the third and fourth rounds of the prequalifying bracket will be played. The players who win their fourth round matches advance into the qualifying round.
In his first round match, Bader defeated TCU's William Edward-Stein 6-2, 6-3. He then followed that up with a tough 7-6, 7-5 win over Texas' Jacoby Lewis. In the third round, he will take on TCU's Facundo Lugones.
Welnetz got a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Clemson's Dominique Maden in his opening round match. In the second round, he earned a 6-4, 6-4 win against New Mexico State's Luis Fernando-Ramirez. On Saturday, the senior will face Florida State's Dominic Cotrone in the third round.
Freshman Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada) fell in a tough battle against Xavier's Mesa Mei 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Trkulja and Bader will compete in the qualifying doubles bracket on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
Welnetz and Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic) will also participate in the qualifying doubles bracket.
