Nittany Lions Travel to Wake Forest Tournament

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Penn State men's tennis team will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. this weekend for the Wake Forest Tournament. The Nittany Lions will face #59 New Mexico at 1:00p.m. on Saturday. At 7:00p.m. on Saturday, they will play the doubles portion of their match against #65 Wake Forest, with the singles portion taking place at 10:00a.m. on Sunday. They will finish up the tournament on Sunday against #48 Alabama at 2:00p.m.

Last Weekend, the Nittany Lions went 1-2 against #40 N.C. State, #69 Cornell, and Cleveland State. Senior Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) and sophomore Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic) both went 3-0 in singles and combined to go 2-1 in doubles. Freshman Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada) and junior Russell Bader(Austin, Texas) ended the weekend with 2-1 records in singles and combined to go 2-1 in doubles as well.

#59 New Mexico defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7-0 last weekend. The Lobos are led by sophomore Samir Iftikhar, ranked 73rd in the January 3rd ITA Poll. Iftikhar has a 12-3 record on the year. Mitch McDaniels leads the Lobos with 15 wins. James Hignett and Riaan Du Toit pace the doubles pairs with a 9-2 record.

Amogh Prabhakar and Danny Kreyman lead #65 Wake Forest. Prabhakar is ranked 59th in the ITA Poll, with Kreyman coming at 90th. Prabhakar is 15-5 this year and Kreyman is 17-6. Adam Lee and Sam Bloom also have 17 wins a piece for the Demon Deacons. The doubles pairs are led by David Hopkins and Prabhakar with a 14-4 record. The Demon Deacons went 3-0 last week with wins over Winthrop, Charlotte, and East Tennessee State.

#48 Alabama opened up the season 2-0 last weekend. Senior Jarryd Botha leads the Crimson Tide with a 14-4 record and a ranking of 79th in the ITA Poll. Becker O'Shaughnessey has 15 wins for Alabama. The two have also paired up to go 9-6 in doubles.
