UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 10/11 Nittany Lion women's lacrosse team will battle its second top-10 opponent of the season when they travel to Charlottesville, Va., for a matchup against No. 6/8 Virginia Sunday, March 3. Opening draw at Klöckner Stadium is set at 1 p.m.
A live, pay-per-view video stream of Sunday afternoon's game will be available through Virginia All-Access.
In last year's meeting against the then-No. 6 Cavaliers, Penn State stormed out of the gate to a 6-0 lead en route to a 14-7 victory at Penn State Lacrosse Field. Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) led the Nittany Lion effort with six points (2g, 4a), while Molly Fernandez (Baltimore, Md./4g, 1a) and Mackenzie Cyr (Westminster, Md./3g, 2a) collected five points each. The victory came against the highest ranked opponent in head coach Missy Doherty's career.
Penn State, which is 0-1 against top-10 teams in 2013, improved to 2-1 this season with a 16-9 victory against Duquesne Feb. 27. Despite falling behind by a pair of one-goal deficits, the Nittany Lions dominated the first half with a nine-goal outburst.
McCormick, who registered a career-high five assists, paced the squad with six points, while Cyr and sophomore midfielder Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.) fired three tallies each.
An Eldersburg, Md., native, McCormick leads Penn State with 14 points (5g, 9a), while Cyr, who has recorded at least one point in the past 10 games, ranks first on the team with seven goals. Senior defender Katie Guy (Whitby, Ont.) has collected a team-high 11 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. Sophomore midfielder Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.) has registered 13 draw controls.
The Cavaliers (2-1), who host top-ranked Maryland Friday, play five preseason top-10 teams in their first six games. Through three games, junior Ashlee Warner leads the team with 11 points and five assists, while sophomore Casey Bocklet has collected a team-high seven goals. Sophomore Courtney Swan leads the team in draw controls (9) and caused turnovers (5) and is tied with senior Megan Dunleavy with six ground balls.
Following their matchup against Virginia, the Nittany Lions will return home to face James Madison Wednesday, March 6. Game time is set at 4 p.m.
