Savoy Sets Two Pool Records in PSU Victory Over Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Penn State swimming and diving program picked up its second victory of the young season on Saturday, recording a 155-137 victory over Buffalo. The Nittany Lions touched the wall first in 10 of the 14 swimming races and claimed a win in the three-meter diving event.

Junior Nate Savoy (Reading, Pa.) had the standout performance of the afternoon, winning the 100 and 200 backstroke events on the way to breaking the Buffalo pool record in each race. The junior bested a record that stood for 20 years in the 100 backstroke by turning in a time of 48.91. Savoy then followed it up by finishing the 200 backstroke race in 1:48.20 for another pool record.

Another Penn State swimmer with a great day was John Hauser (Pottsville, Pa.), who added two victories to his season win total. The senior recorded the best PSU time of the season in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:38.89. Hauser then doubled his wins on the afternoon by winning the 100 freestyle event for the second-straight meet, posting a time of 44.92.

Lucas Kachurick (McKeesport, Pa.) notched the first victory for Penn State diving this season by turning in the best showing of his four-year career in the three-meter event. The senior posted a score of 314.98 to win the competition. Kachurick then finished with the second highest score in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 277.28.

Other Lions to finish with the best times in the events were James Wilson (Nottingham, Pa.) in the 100 breaststroke, Chris Cipolla (South River, N.J.) in the 200 breaststroke, Nick Ankosko (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Matt Salig (Downington, Pa.) in the 400 IM. Wilson's mark of 56.70 in the 100 breaststroke was the best time of the season for the Nittany Lions.

The Blue and White also performed admirably in the relay events, touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:22.76 and placing first in the 200 medley relay, posting a time of 1:31.42.

Penn State has a quick turnaround after Saturday's victory. The Nittany Lions will travel to Charlottesville, Va. for a two-day event with Virgina, Texas and West Virginia. The competition will begin on Friday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. and the second day of action is slated to start on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m.
