Newbill, Penn State men's basketball (2-1) fell short in a 106-97, double overtime loss to Charlotte (2-0) on the road in the Charleston Classic Thursday evening at TD Arena. The Nittany Lions rallied back from behind by as many as 17 points in the second half to send the game into two overtimes.
Four Nittany Lions posted double digit scoring, led by Newbill's career-high mark. Newbill is the first Nittany Lion to notch 35 points since Pete Lisicky put up the tally against Penn in 1996. Junior Brandon Taylor finished second on the squad with 19 points, including 11 in the first half.
Sophomore Geno Thorpe finished third on the team with a career-high 14 points, while freshman Shep Garner rounded out the group with 12 points.
Senior Ross Travis and Taylor led the team with nine rebounds apiece.
This one looked like a runaway with Charlotte up 63-46 with 11:46 left in regulation. But Penn State used a 37-20 run to the buzzer and tied the game on senior John Johnson's 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left.
Penn State had a chance to win in the first overtime, but Newbill's drive to the basket with the game tied at 90-all was blocked by Cameron Blakley.
Ogbueze got the 49ers going in the second extra session. Thorne added two foul shots and a jam and Charlotte was up 97-93.
The Nittany Lions closed it to two points on Garner's driving bucket, but Ogbueze answered again for Charlotte. Penn State could get no closer.

Trailing by eight early in the first half of the game, Taylor put the Nittany Lions on the board with a three pointer to make it 8-3. Newbill followed with another trey to trim the deficit to three, 9-6. Newbill came out of the media timeout with a jumper to give the Nittany Lions their first lead of the evening, 10-9. Building on the advantage, Penn State used a 6-3 stretch to extend the lead to four, 16-12, with 12:32 remaining.
The 49ers answered with back-to-back three-pointers to move ahead by one, 17-16, heading into the second media timeout of the frame. Charlotte continued surge firing seven unanswered points to widen the margin to eight, 24-16, with 9:26 remaining.
Chipping away at the lead, Thorpe sparked a 7-2 run with a trio of free throws that helped the Nittany Lions arrive within three, 26-23. Unable to sustain the momentum, Charlotte grew its lead to as many as 11 with less than two minutes remaining in the half. PSU regrouped with five unanswered points from Newbill to narrow the gap to six, 40-34, heading into the intermission.
Jack came out of the break with a layup to shave the advantage to four, 40-36, but the 49ers responded with a 12-4 run to push the lead back into double digits, 52-40, with 16:45 remaining. Penn State followed with back-to-back jumpers to make it 52-44, but Charlotte put together an 11-0 run to move ahead by as many as 17, 63-46, forcing the Nittany Lions to call a timeout.
Penn State came out of the break with eight unanswered points featuring two three-pointers from Newbill and Garner to cut the lead down to nine, 63-54 with 10:14 remaining in the game. Trailing by nine with 5:34 to play, Taylor opened a 5-0 run with a bucket to push PSU within six, 72-66.
Still fighting, a three-pointer and a trio of free throws from Thorpe vaulted PSU within two, 75-73 with 1:37 remaining in the game. Charlotte cut off the run with a trey to remain ahead by five, 78-73, but three-pointer from Newbill brought Penn State back within two, 78-76. A clutch layup from Newbill pulled Penn State within one with 16 seconds remaining 81-80, before Johnson's three-ball with less than two seconds left in the game tied the frame, 83-83 to send the contest into overtime.
