UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- For the fourth straight meeting, Penn State men's hockey and Michigan State played to a game that was decided by less than a goal in a 2-2 tie Friday night at Pegula Ice Arena in front of 6,062 fans. David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) scored the equalizer with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime, but the Spartans took the shootout point, 1-0.
"We haven't had a lot of success in (shootouts)," said head coach Guy Gadowsky. "And that's unfortunate because that's part of getting points in the Big Ten. I thought it was nice to see us battle back twice, but any time you leave the rink without a win it doesn't feel great."
While Penn State (10-7-3, 4-2-1-0 Big Ten) didn't pick up the shootout win, it still earned a tie and a point in the Big Ten standings thanks to Goodwin's ninth goal of the year. The Nittany Lions sit in second place with 13 points, two behind first-place Michigan (5-1-0-0 in the Big Ten) and six points clear of Michigan State (7-10-2 overall, 1-2-2-2 Big Ten).
Down 2-1 and peppering Michigan State's net, the Nittany Lions looked to stoke the same Friday night magic that led to last week's wild four-goal comeback against Ohio State. The goal finally came with PSU's leading line on the ice.
Goodwin dumped the puck deep into the right corner as it was scooped out by Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) to the center of the ice as Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif.) fired on Jake Hildebrand (48 saves), who made the pad save. Despite being out-numbered around the net, Goodwin collected the puck and fired past a sprawling Hildebrand.
Holstrom earned his Big Ten-leading 17th assist, while Bailey was credited with his ninth. Holstrom is currently on a three-game point streak, while Goodwin is on a three-game scoring streak.
In the first period, Michigan State struck first on a Ryan Keller tally with 3:49 remaining as he knocked home a Brent Darnell offering that was flicked high in the air and fell to Keller, who was alone in the crease.
Penn State was able to even the score on its third 4-on-4 goal of the season as Scott Conway (Basingstoke, England) sent a pass from his end line to a streaking Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.) at the redline for a breakaway with less than a minute. Scheid made a move to his right and put the puck through Hildebrand as it spun into the goal with 59 seconds remaining. Luke Juha (Mississauga, Ontario) fed Conway for his ninth assist of the season.
Just 26 seconds later, Villiam Haag unleashed a rocket from above the right circle that got past goaltender Eamon McAdam (Perkasie, Pa.). Haag's goal was his third of the year and came with only 33 seconds left in the period as the Spartans held a 2-1 lead despite being out-shot 21-10.
Penn State out-shot the Spartans 50-35 for the game and eclipsed the 50-shot barrier for the fourth time in 2014-15. Friday was the first game where the Lions didn't emerge victorious when shooting 50 shots or more (3-0-1).
McAdam was vital to Penn State in the second period and overtime as he was called upon to make 12 saves in the second and five in overtime. The Nittany Lions were out-shot 5-1 in the extra session.
In the shootout, Scheid just missed on the left post, while McAdam stopped Michael Ferrantino. In the second round, Kenny Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) had Hildebrand down but couldn't get the puck over his left bad, whiel McAdam was unable to stop Darnell. Bailey was stoned on PSU's third attempt. The Nittany Lions fell to 0-3 in shootouts this season and 0-5 all-time.
