UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The No. 12 Nittany Lion women's lacrosse team heads to Ithaca, N.Y. to face the Cornell Big Red in the teams' final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday evening. Opening draw at Schoellkopf Field is set for 5 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: No. 12 Penn State 11, Michigan 5 (April 9)
The 12th-ranked Nittany Lions battled a slow start and pouring rain to beat Michigan, 11-5, Thursday night at Penn State Lacrosse Field. Senior Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) tallied a season-high seven points as the Lions closed the game on a 9-2 run.
McCormick scored twice and dished five assists for the Nittany Lions (10-3, 3-0 Big Ten) who reached double-digit wins for the fifth straight season under Missy Doherty. McCormick played a hand in all five first-half goals, scoring once and assisting four others, before adding another marker and helper in the second half. McCormick, already the Penn State leader in all-time assists, upped her career total to 123.
McCormick's standout play was supported by eight Nittany Lions who tallied goals and Emi Smith's (Denver, Colo.) six saves in net. Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) notched a two-goal game as PSU's only other multi-goal scorer.
MCCORMICK, SMITH EARN BIG TEN WEEKLY PLAUDITS
Two Nittany Lion women's lacrosse student-athletes were named Big Ten players of the week on Monday afternoon as Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) and Emi Smith (Denver, Colo.) picked up offensive and defensive honors, respectively.
Both McCormick and Smith earned their second Big Ten weekly awards of the season by anchoring their team's 11-5 victory over Michigan this past Thursday. McCormick registered a seven-point night on two goals and five assists, while Smith saved six shots.
MCCORMICK RISES IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Maggie McCormick is the current Penn State record holder for assists (123) and has risen to fourth in all-time points (243). Her point total is the most by a Nittany Lion in a single career since Tami Worley registered 289 in 1986-89. McCormick (120 goals) is tied for 15th all-time at Penn State in scoring.
BALANCED SCORING
The Nittany Lions have received goals from 14 different sources this season with eight different double-digit scorers in all. Steph Lazo (25) leads the bunch followed by Tatum Coffey (23), Madison Cyr (21), Maggie McCormick (20), Jenna Mosketti (18), Kelly Lechner (18), Katie O'Donnell (17) and Abby Smucker (10).
One other Nittany Lion is on the cusp of 10 goals: Jess Loizeaux (9).
LAZO LEADING THE LIONS
Despite missing two games with injury, Penn State sophomore Steph Lazo is the team's leader in goals with 25.
Lazo had a five-goal game against Lehigh and a hat trick against Bucknell before scoring two vs. Duquesne. She found the back of the net once more against Virginia in February and added another hat trick vs. Loyola on March 7.
Lazo's hat trick against Stanford was her fifth game with three or more goals before she added two more tallied at Rutgers. Lazo notched her sixth game of three or more goals vs. Ohio State.
In all, Lazo has 31 points on the season, tied for second on the team with Tatum Coffey (31, 24-7), only behind Maggie McCormick (49, 20-29) and. Entering 2015, Lazo had only one goal to her name.
CYR, MCCORMICK NAMED TO TEWAARATON AWARD WATCH LIST
Senior Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) and junior Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) were named as two of 50 women's lacrosse players to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List on Thursday night, Feb. 26. The Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour, honors the best men's and women's collegiate lacrosse player.
This is the fifth straight season the Nittany Lions have had a representative on the preseason watch list. Potential additions to the watch list will be announced March 19 and April 9 before the first cutdown to 25 players on April 23.
ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell (8-4, 3-2 Ivy League) is currently on a two-game skid following an 8-2 start to the season. Last week, the Big Red fell to previously winless Dartmouth, 10-9, before dropping a 13-11 decision to Princeton.
The Big Red averages 14.50 goals per game, while allowing 8.58. Cornell attempts 29.9 shots per game and scores at an impressive 48.5 percent clip. Big Red goalkeepers have held a save percentage of 41.8.
Cornell has three 20+ goal scorers led by Lindsay Toppe with 38. She's followed by Catherine Ellis with 29. Amie Dickson is the offense's facilitator with 22 goals and 25 assists for a team-high 47 points, while Emily Tripodi has 16 goals and 24 assists.
Dickson leads the team in ground balls (24), draw controls (39) and caused turnovers (11).
In net, Renee Poullott has started all but one game, earning 74 saves while allowing 99 goals for a .428 save percentage and an 8.44 GAA.
THE PENN STATE-CORNELL SERIES
Penn State and Cornell will meet for the 10th time on Tuesday with the Nittany Lions holding a 7-2 advantage. Last year, PSU took a 13-8 home decision.

Penn State is one of six members in the inaugural season for Big Ten women's lacrosse. The Nittany Lions join storied programs such as Maryland and its 12 NCAA titles and Northwestern with its seven championships. When PSU's two NCAA crowns are factored in, the Big Ten is the winningest conference in women's lacrosse.
Joining PSU, Maryland and Northwestern are Ohio State, Rutgers and Michigan in the Big Ten fold. Each team will play the other five members of the conference once. The 2015 Big Ten Tournament is set for April 30-May 3 at Rutgers with all six teams participating.
NEXT TIME OUT
Penn State flies west to the Windy City to face No. 7 Northwestern on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. The former ALC members will meet for the 24th time.
