UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State cheerleading teams had a strong Spring semester, as they scored high at a pair of competitions in January and drew a Top-40 ranking according to Cheer! Daily in April.

The Penn State coed team placed sixth at the World University Cheerleading Championship in January. The event was held at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla.

The Nittany Lions also performed well in the Universal Cheerleaders Association National Cheerleading Championship at the same event. The all-girl team placed 10th in Division 1A, while the coed team placed 14th.

Additionally, Penn State's cheerleading program was one of four Big Ten programs, joining Indiana, Minnesota, and Ohio State, to be recognized by Cheer! amongst its Top 40. The Lions ranked 26th overall, with the publication stating, "Penn State is a cheerleading program on the rise with a great college and game day atmosphere to go with it." Teams were ranked based on the number of scholarships offered, academics, game day atmosphere and competitiveness.
