CHARLESTON, WV. - No. 9 Penn State (19-8, 12-1 EIVA) took advantage of Charleston's mistakes to sweep the Golden Eagles (25-14, 25-18, 25-15) and sweep the season series against Charleston (WV) Friday night on the road improving to 2-0 in the all-time series.
"I thought that no matter who we had on the court we followed the game plan to a 'T'," said head coach Mark Pavlik.
"(Our guys) knew what we wanted to do in each rotation, and sometimes when you end up getting everybody playing time like that it tends to go out the window. These guys did a real good job of maintaining their defensive discipline and understanding what we wanted to do."
13 Nittany Lions saw action in the three set win over first-year EIVA member Charleston (WV).
"Our game plan coming in was to keep serving pressure on them," said Pavlik.
"We weren't looking for aces by any stretch of the imagination we just wanted to make them handle the ball and try to establish our physical advantage we had over them. I thought it was very apparent that they were very aware of our block and they were trying to go around the block a lot and over the top with off-speed; you just can't do that against us, we did a good job of defensively of picking it up in our transition game and ran it back at them."
Penn State's 10 service aces tied a season high from the last time the Nittany Lions played Charleston (WV) back on Feb. 26 in Rec Hall.
Chris Nugent (Fair Lawn, N.J.) finished the match hitting a season high .700 while contributing eight kills on ten swings and adding two service aces from the service line and a block at the net.
Penn State had four players hit .500 or better including Kevin Gear (Rochester, N.Y.) who finished hitting 1.000 with three kills on three attempts.
Taylor Hammond (Mission Viejo, Calif.) paced the offense with 14 assist followed closely by fellow senior Zack Parik (Woodridge, Ill.) added 11 of his own.
Penn State trailed for exactly one point in the entire match as Charleston (WV) opened the third set with a kill from Eugene Stuart to take a 1-0 lead quickly followed by an attack error from the Golden Eagles to knot things up at 1-1, the Nittany Lions won the third and deciding set 25-15.
Penn State finishes their regular season slate tomorrow night when they travel to take on the George Mason Patriots who are currently in the hunt for a spot in the EIVA semifinals. Tomorrow's game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. ET in Fairfax, Va.
