UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Nittany Lion men's golf team finished round one with a strong back-nine and currently sits alone in 5th place at the Big Ten Championships in Baltimore, Maryland.
"We made a handful of wrong strategic decisions in the middle of our round that put us in a tough place today," said head coach Greg Nye. "We need to clean that up tonight."
Through each player's first 11 holes, the team was 13-over par, but rebounded to finish at 7-over with nine birdies as a team from the 12th hole on.
"From hole 12 into the clubhouse, our four counters played 5-under and got us back in the tournament," Nye said. "That is great play as a couple of those closing holes are very tough."
The duo of junior Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) and sophomore Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) played 6-under in their final seven holes, respectively. Miller shot even par on the day with four birdies and four bogies to sit tied for 9th place, while Huntzinger rattled off four birdies on his final seven holes to finish tied for 16th at 1-over.
Miller and Huntzinger combined for nine birdies on the day which is the second-most in the field among teammates.
Freshman Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and sophomore JD Hughes (Carlisle, Pa.) both finished in a tie for 28th at 3-over. Davis shot very consistently on the day with 13 pars which is best for third in the field. Meanwhile, Hughes shot 1-under on his back-nine with birdies on the 11th and 17th holes.
Senior Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) shot 10-over and sits tied for 67th.
Illinois sits in the top position, holding a 14-stroke lead on second-place Ohio State at 11-umder. The Buckeyes are 3-over and are followed by Purdue (+4), Northwestern (+6) and the Nittany Lions at 7-over.
Illinois' Dylan Meyer shot a 7-under, 63 to lead all golfers and holds a three-stroke lead over Minnesota's Thomas Longbella.
The Lions will tee off from the first hole beginning at 9:00 a.m. paired alongside golfers from Northwestern and Wisconsin.
