UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State men's lacrosse head coach Jeff Tambroni announced additions to the Nittany Lions' coaching staff Wednesday morning, naming John Haus as Penn State's new assistant coach and John Hogan the newest volunteer assistant coach.
"We are thrilled to welcome two new coaches to our staff this fall," said head coach Jeff Tambroni on the new staff members.
"Coach Haus, who grew up on the sideline watching his father coach at the collegiate level, still competes in the MLL. His competitive spirit and knowledge of the game will provide a valuable asset to our offense, similar to the impact that he has had while coaching at Dickinson, High Point and Furman. Haus will assist with all facets of our offense and the development of our offensive personnel.
"Coach Hogan will provide assistance in a variety of areas after a completing a successful career as a two-way midfielder at Cornell University. He also grew up on the lacrosse sideline observing his father coach at the high school and collegiate levels. John possesses a tremendous mind for the game and he will have an immediate impact on our young players.
"Coach Haus and Coach Hogan are wonderful ambassadors of the game and we are fortunate to have them representing Penn State lacrosse."
Haus, a former three-time All American and MLL All-Star, joins the Nittany Lions after serving as an assistant coach and the offensive coordinator at Furman University the last two seasons. During his tenure with the Paladins, he assisted in all aspects of the program, including player development, recruitment and video breakdown. In his most recent season, he mentored the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, while five other players earned Second Team All-SoCon honors.
Prior to his time at Furman, Haus was an assistant coach at High Point University for a season, where he led the goalie unit. Under his leadership, the team logged a 57% save percentage, while starting goalkeeper Austin Geisler finished 16th in the nation in save percentage. In addition to his work with the goalie unit, Haus helped with offensive game plans and scouting reports.
Haus began his post-graduate coaching career at Dickinson College, serving as the assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the team for one season.
Haus was selected by the Charlotte Hounds with the 15th pick of the 2013 Major League Lacrosse draft and played in the 2013 championship game. He has been a captain for the Hounds since 2015 and was an All-Star game participant during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
A standout at the University of Maryland, Haus was a First Team All-ACC and USILA First Team All-American selection in 2013, playing in the Terrapins' midfield. During his time in College Park, Haus earned the team's awards for the team's top midfielder (2013) and the team's unsung hero (2012). A 2012 and 2011 USILA All-America honorable mention, he helped guide the Terps to an ACC Championship in 2011.
Hogan comes to Penn State after coaching stints with St. Ignatius College Prep, NXT Lacrosse and the Annapolis Hawks. During these roles, Hogan served as a mentor for student-athletes while working on drills and scenarios for his teams. Additionally, Hogan worked on individual skill development with student-athletes.
Hogan played college lacrosse at Cornell from 2012 through 2015, helping the Big Red to three consecutive Ivy League championships from 2013 to 2015. He earned Second Team All-Ivy League honors in his junior and senior seasons and was named the 2015 J.E.B. Sportsmanship Award Winner in 2015.
Haus will replace former assistant coach Chris Doctor on the Penn State staff. Director of Operations David Shriver accepted an assistant coaching role at Georgetown University, with the staff opening a national search for his replacement.
