ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Three Nittany Lions found the back of the net and Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded a shutout as the Penn State women's hockey team defeated the RIT Tigers, 5-0, Friday afternoon in a College Hockey America (CHA) contest at the Gene Polisseni Center.
For the Penn State (3-7-8, 1-2-4 CHA) offense, freshman Natalie Heising (Maple Grove, Minn.) and senior Christi Vetter (Lakeville, Minn.) both recorded a pair of goals, while freshman Sophie Slattery (Edina, Minn.) also lit the lamp. In net for the Nittany Lions, Ehresmann played the full 60 minutes and made 15 saves for her fifth career shutout.
After a scoreless first period of action, the Nittany Lions got on the scoreboard at 2:59 into the second period on Heising's first goal of the afternoon to put Penn State up 1-0 over RIT (4-11-2, 1-6-0 CHA).
With the score still 1-0 in favor of Penn State heading into the third period, the Blue & White netted four goals on 15 shot attempts during the final 20 minutes of play. The Nittany Lions scored three of their final four goals of the day within the first 8:12 of the third period.
Slattery opened up the scoring in the third period with her third career goal at 1:03 followed by Heising making it a 3-0 outing just 1:57 later.
Vetter netted her two goals on the day during the third period as she scored at 8:12 and then with 42 seconds left in the regulation.
In net for Tigers, Terra Lanteigne recorded 26 saves in 47:50 of play, while Jessi O'Leary tallied five saves in 11:48 of action.
The two teams close out the series Saturday, Dec. 2, with puck drop scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Gene Polisseni Center.
