WENTZVILLE, Mo. - The Penn State women's hockey team picked up a 3-1 victory over Lindenwood in College Hockey America (CHA) play Friday night at the Lindenwood Ice Arena.
Freshman Katie Rankin (Kanata, Ontario) scored a pair of goals, while sophomore Brooke Madsen (Eagan, Minn.) netted two points on one-goal and one-assist.
With the win, Penn State improves to 6-8-8 overall and 3-2-4 in CHA play, while Lindenwood falls to 5-13-1 on the year and 3-6-0 in CHA action.
The Penn State offense tallied its first goal of the evening with 6:00 left on the scoreboard in the first period on Rankin's first goal of the evening and her sixth of the season.
On Rankin's power play goal in the first period, Kelsey Crow (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded the primary assist, while Madsen received credit for the secondary assist.
After outshooting Lindenwood, 15-6, during the opening 20 minutes of action, Penn State held a 1-0 lead.
The Nittany Lions then added to their lead at 7:32 into the second period on Madsen's fourth goal of her sophomore season. On the Madsen strike, senior Aly Hardy (St. Albans, Vt.) was tabbed with the lone assist.
Lindenwood cut into the Nittany Lion lead on Sierra Burt's fifth goal of the season with 8:30 remaining in regulation. Looking for the game-tying goal late in regulation, Lindenwood pulled netminder Jolene deBruyn with 1:18 left on the scoreboard.
The Nittany Lions were able to withstand the Lindenwood attack down the final stretch of regulation with a pair of saves from senior goalie Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.).
With four seconds left in regulation, Rankin won a faceoff just outside the Lindenwood zone and fired the puck into the empty net for her second goal of the night with one second remaining on the clock.
In net, Ehresmann tallied a 20-save outing for her fifth win of the season, while deBruyn finished with 28 saves on the night.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. (EST) inside the Lindenwood Ice Arena.
