Altig Named to US Lacrosse Women's National Team Staff

Jan. 9, 2018

SPARKS, Md. - Associate Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Amy Altig was named to the coaching staff of the U.S. women's national team as announced by head coach Jenny Levy in late December.

Altig, who was promoted to Associate Head Coach of Penn State last January is entering her eighth season on the sidelines for the Nittany Lions.

Just like she does at Penn State, Altig will work with the goaltenders and serve as the team's defensive coordinator. She has helped Penn State to six straight NCAA Tournaments including four quarterfinals and the last two NCAA National Semifinals with a combined 31-11 mark during the past two seasons.

In 2015, Altig coached the Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year and IWLCA Third-Team All-American Emi Smith as Penn State captured the inaugural Big Ten Tournament Championship by defeating Ohio State 13-11.

Since arriving to campus, Altig has steadily improved every goalie she has worked with including last season with Cat Rainone who posted a .465 save percentage in 21 games good for second in the Big Ten and 26th in the nation after seeing action in just 17 games the previous three seasons.

A goalie herself at James Madison, Altig was a two-time All-CAA performer and spent many years in the U.S. national team program including a spot on the U.S. team during the Prague Cup touring team in 2008. She was also an alternate on the 2009 U.S. World Cup Team.

Now just nine years later she will help coach the same team she once was a member of as the United States prepares for the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in 2021. The U.S. is coming off the 2017 World Cup Championship this past summer and looks to maintain its recent success in the coming years.

Altig will be joined by Alex Frank (Associate Head Coach, Colorado), Joe Spallina (Stony Brook Head Coach) and Colleen Shearer (Volunteer Coach, JMU) on Head Coach Jenny Levy's staff.
