UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State softball team was defeated 11-1 in five innings to No. 17 Michigan in the final game of the Big Ten Conference three-game series Sunday, April 8 at Nittany Lion Softball Park and Beard Field.
Junior Tori Dubois (Mt. Vernon, N.H.) notched her fifth home run of the season with a solo shot over the left field wall, while Meghan Williams (Bethlehem, Pa.) tallied a hit against the Wolverines. Junior Madison Shaffer (New Castle, Pa.) took the loss in the circle, throwing 1.2 innings, while Jessica Cummings (Owings, Md.) tossed 3.1 innings in relief.
Faith Canfield led the Wolverines at the plate with two hits and four RBI, while Tera Blanco had two hits and two RBI.
Michigan opened the scoring in the top of the second inning notching six runs on six hits and one Penn State throwing error. The Wolverines continued to add to their lead in the top of the third innings, tacking on four more runs on three hits to extend their lead to 10-0.
Michigan continued to press offensively, adding an 11th run in the top of the fourth inning to take the 11-0 lead into the bottom half.
Dubois led off the inning on a first pitch home run over the left field wall to mark her fifth of the season for the Blue and White. Penn State was unable to overcome the large deficit in the remaining inning, falling 11-1 in five innings.
