VERACRUZ, Mexico - Penn State rising sophomore Gabe Castano (Allentown, Pa,) claimed the gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle in Mexico's Long Course National Championships in Veracruz Saturday night.
Castano touched the wall in a personal-best 51.50 seconds and will compete again Monday in the 50m freestyle.
He donned a Penn State t-shirt during the medal ceremony to receive his medal.
Castano, a native of Monterrey, Mexico, made a big impact at Penn State as a freshman this past season, as he ranks as the fourth-fastest performer in school history in the 50-yard freestyle (19.75 seconds) and scored at the Big Ten Championships in the 50 and 100 freestyles. Castano led the team in both events for the year.
Prior to Penn State, Castano was a three-time Pennsylvania State Champion and four-year letterwinner swimming at Allentown Central Catholic.
