VERACRUZ, Mexico ââ'¬" Penn State rising sophomore Gabe Castano (Allentown, Pa,) claimed his second gold medal of the weekend, winning the 50-meter freestyle in Mexico's Long Course National Championships in Veracruz Monday night.
Castano swam a personal best time in the 50m free preliminaries of 22.70, which ranks him 122nd in the world.
Saturday, Castano also claimed gold in the 100m freestyle, as he touched the wall in a personal-best 51.50 seconds.
Castano, a native of Monterrey, Mexico, made a big impact at Penn State as a freshman this past season, as he ranks as the fourth-fastest performer in school history in the 50-yard freestyle (19.75 seconds) and scored at the Big Ten Championships in the 50 and 100 freestyles. Castano led the team in both events for the year.
Prior to Penn State, Castano was a three-time Pennsylvania State Champion and four-year letterwinner swimming at Allentown Central Catholic.
