UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. â€" Members of the Penn State women's ice hockey team have been recognized for outstanding academic achievement for the 2017-18 season. Six women's hockey student-athletes were named American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Krampade Division I All-Americans Scholars in the second year of the award's existence.
Recent graduates Hannah Ehresmann and Bella Sutton, Kelsey Crow, Brooke Madsen, Katie McMillan, and Sophie Slattery each recorded grade-point averages above 3.6 for both semesters and participated in at least 40% of last season's games played to qualify for the honor. Sutton, Crow, and McMillan are now two-time recipients of the award after earning All-American Scholar status in its inaugural publication.
The AHCA All-American Scholar awards add to a list of academic accolades already gathered by the 2017-18 Nittany Lions. Seventeen Penn State representatives appeared on the College Hockey America (CHA) All-Academic Team, including all six previously listed student-athletes. McMillan was one of 15 CHA Student-Athletes of the Year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
In addition, McMillan, Crow, Ehresmann, Madsen, and Sutton were named 2017-18 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. To qualify, each student-athlete selected was enrolled in at least their second academic year at Penn State and achieved a 3.7 GPA or higher for the school year.
A total of 217 NCAA Division I women's hockey players were recognized by the AHCA. Last summer, a total of 1,261 student-athletes competing in women's and men's ice hockey in Divisions I, II, and III reached the standard set for the award.
