SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Penn State women's hockey team won its second away game of the season in a 3-1 non-conference victory over Union at Messa Rink Friday afternoon.
Two of Penn State's goals came in the first period from Brooke Madsen and Natalie Heising. Madsen's score was assisted by Heising and Izzy Heminger and Heising's goal went unassisted.
Abby Welch added an empty-net goal with six seconds left assisted by Kelsey Crow.
Jenna Brenneman was solid once again in goal, making 18 saves in a near shutout for her second win of the season.
"We will definitely take the win, but we let our foot off the pedal in the last two periods," said Head Coach Jeff Kampersal. "We are looking to learn from today and be better for tomorrow. Union is a well-coached that plays hard and disciplined."
Penn State (2-2-1) dominated the puck early and held a 9-0 shot advantage in the first period. The eighth of those nine shots ended up being the Nittany Lion's first goal by Madsen at 5:25. Heminger relayed the puck to Heising at the blue line who dished to Madsen. Madsen maneuvered into the slot and beat Union (1-4) goaltender Amelia Murray with a wrist shot to take the lead.
The goal was Madsen's second of the season. Heminger earned her first collegiate point on the play.
Late in the first, Heising was disruptive on the forecheck and forced a Union turnover in the Dutchwomen's zone. Her initial shot was saved but she cleaned up the rebound for her third goal of the season at 16:33 to give Penn State a 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless second period and almost a full scoreless final period, Union took advantage of an empty-net power play with just 12 seconds remaining to pull within one, but Welch won the next faceoff back to Crow who played give-and-go with Welch to set up the empty netter with seven seconds remaining.

Penn State held a 33-19 shots edge for the game…The Nittany Lions also 33-of-57 draws…Penn State had killed nine-straight power plays prior to Union's late goal…Senior Meike Meilleur skated in her 100th career game , becoming the 19th Nittany Lion to play in 100 career collegiate games in program history…Penn State remains unbeaten since the beginning of the 2017-18 season when scoring three or more goals (11-0-2)…Both teams play again tomorrow at 3 p.m.
