Penn State Women’s Swimming & Diving Splits Double Dual at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Penn State women's swimming & diving team beat Navy 156-144, but fall to foe North Carolina 127-173 in the pool at Lejeune Hall at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Nittany Lion Relays
Nittany Lions Marie Schobel, Olivia Jack, Maddie Hart and Katrina Kuhn took second place in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.25. Elizabeth Gaspari, Madison Ledwith, Camryn Barry and Olivia Jack finished the 400 free relay in 3:25.95 earning another second place finish for Penn State.

Top Individual Performances
Senior captain Ally McHugh secured two first-place finishes in both the 500 freestyle and 400 IM with times of 4:49.40 and 4:17.40, respectively and took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.15.

Freshman swimmer Madison Murtagh came in first place in the 1000 free, completing the race in 10:02.38. Murtagh also saw a fourth-place finish in the 500 free (5:01.03).

Carly Hart took home two second-place finishes in both the 200 breaststroke (2:16.42) and 400 IM (4:24.91). Elizabeth Gaspari, Camryn Barry and Maddie Hart all saw top-three finishes for Penn State. Gaspari took second in the 100 free with a time of 51.98, while Barry claimed the second place slot in the 500 free (4:52.47) and saw a third-place finish in the 1000 free (10:05.10). Hart came in second for the 100 fly (55.56), third in the 200 fly (2:01.96), and third in the 200 back (2:01.12).

"We were good in spots and a little sloppy in others," said Head Coach Tim Murphy about today's performance, "We had some good things accomplished that got us back in the racing mood after not racing for a while now. Shows us where we're at and what we need to focus on". 

On the boards, Kamryn Umbel took home sixth place in the 3-meter (239.15) and seventh in the 1-meter (251.50). Christina Crowell saw eighth place finishes in both events achieving a personal-best on the 1-meter.

"The women had some good dives," said Diving Coach Jeff DiNicola, "Christina's back 1 ½ on the one meter was the best she has ever done."

Next Up
Penn State returns home next Saturday to compete against Bloomsburg at McCoy Natatorium. It will be the Nittany Lions final home meet of the season. The meet will honor the senior members of the team with the competition beginning at noon.
