GAINSVILLE, Fla. – The Penn State women's golf team finished tenth in the 13-team field at the 2019 Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course following a final round 10-over score of 290 on Sunday morning.
Penn State was led by freshman Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) who climbed 24 spots to finish tied for ninth after firing a 2-under round of 68 to finsh the tournament with a 2-over score of 212. Willis once again dominated the back-nine shooting 3-under 32 on the back with four birdies to just one bogey. After going 6-over on the back-nine to begin the tournament, the freshman went a combined seven under on those same nine holes during the final two rounds to register her eighth round this season of even-par or better.
The Nittany Lions finished the tournament 36-over with a score of 876.
Florida shot 2-under on Sunday to climb from third and hoist the championship with a 2-under 838 finish while Campbell (3-over), Miami (3-over), Tennessee (6-over) and East Carolina (12-over) round out the top five.
Junior Megan McLean (Lebanon, N.J.) bounced back from a second round 80 to card a 3-over, 73 in the final round while senior classmates Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) and Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.) registered scores of 74 (4-over) and 75 (5-over), respectively, during the final round of competition to round out the four teams scores. Basso and Waller finished the tournament tied for 44th and 48th, respectively.
Penn State registered just 11 birdies in the final round led by Willis' four and finished the tournament with 36 birdies bringing its season total to 326.
The Nittany Lions are back in action in eight days when they open the Briar's Creek Invitational in South Carolina on March 18-19.
