JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Thirty Nittany Lions are set to compete in the NCAA East Prelims Thursday-Sunday, May 23-25, for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships.
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
Three Nittany Lions claimed Big Ten Championships at the Big Ten Outdoor championships. Senior Morgan Shigo was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships after claiming Penn State's first men's hammer throw Big Ten Championship in school history.
Junior Danae Rivers added to her already impressive 2019 by winning two Big Ten titles in the 800m and 1500m races. Rivers thrilled the crowd with a come from behind victory in the 1500m, winning the race by .02 seconds and her second straight 1500m title. Less than an hour later, Rivers won the 800m title for the second time in her career (2017).
Competing in his first Big Ten Outdoor Championships, Noah Swaby finished third and advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships with 7,411 points.
Along with Shigo, three Nittany Lions throwers earned medals at the Big Ten championships. Mark Porter (2nd- Men's Javelin), Madison Smith (2nd- Women's Javelin) and Michael Biddle (3rd- Men's Javelin) climbed the podium for Penn State.
Domenic Perretta (Men's 800m) and Kiara Lester (Women's 400m) finished second and third respectively to round out the medalist for the Nittany Lions.
NCAA EAST PRELIMS PREVIEW
Thirty Nittany Lions will compete over three days in Jacksonville, Florida, with the opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
In 2018, 12 Nittany Lions advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Isaiah Harris won the 800m national title in 2018 to highlight competition for the Nittany Lions.
Current Nittany Lions, Morgan Shigo (Hammer Throw), Michael Biddle (Men's Javelin), Danae Rivers (1500m) and Stephanie Sievers (Women's Javelin) all advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2018.
Morgan Shigo and Danae Rivers also earned first team All-American honors with their performances at the outdoor championships in 2018.
