Camp Notebook: What We've Learned

August 31, 2019, a date that every Penn State fan has circled on their calendar. As the anticipation continues to build in Happy Valley, here's what stood out on the practice field this week.

Headline of the Week: Positive vibes only
A week from Saturday, head coach James Franklin and his program will take the field for the first time in 2019. One trait that has remained constant within his organization - confidence. Sure, that's something every program has at this point in the season, but when it comes to this young and talented roster, confidence is the single biggest trigger to a fast start. There will be mistakes made, no team is perfect, but pay attention to the poise this team displays to open up the season.

Aside from the confidence aspect, this team remains healthy headed into the season. A note that can't be said for every program around the country.

Quote of the Week: PJ Mustipher
"My whole life I've been taught if you want the results, you'll have to put in the extra work," PJ Mustipher stated during media availability on Wednesday. "It isn't always going to be easy but if you want good results, then you're going to put in the work."

The Maryland native was praised by head coach James Franklin for his extra individual work this summer. The defensive tackle enters his sophomore season after being one of 16 true freshmen to make their collegiate debut a season ago.

Standout Player of the Week: Jake Pinegar
During a simulated special teams period at Beaver Stadium, sophomore kicker Jake Pinegar took center stage amongst his teammates. Surrounded by empty bleachers, blaring simulated crowd noise and head coach James Franklin calling timeout in an attempt to "ice" the Iowa native, Pinegar stepped up and drilled three consecutive field goals. While the battle for that position continues to shake itself out, Pinegar has remained confident and battled every time his numbers been called.
