Women's Swimming & Diving Beat Iowa in Tri-Dual Meet

EVANSTON, Ill. — Penn State Swimming & Diving concluded its tri-dual meet against Northwestern and Iowa on Saturday afternoon at Norris Aquatic Center with the women's team besting Iowa, 153-146. Both the men and the women lost to Northwestern, and the men also took a narrow loss to Iowa.
 
The women raced for eight top-five finishes and the men swam for four.

This weekend junior Niki Nolte, two-time cancer survivor, swam in her first full collegiate meet.
 
Top Swims
Senior Stephanie Szekely had a solid day, placing second in the 200 backstroke (1:59.82) and fourth in the 400 IM (4:22.00). 
 
Junior Brooke Matthias finished second in the 100 butterfly (54.10).
 
The Nittany Lion freshman Cat Stanford stood out in this meet, placing third in the 50 freestyle (23.38). She also swam well in the 100 free with a time of 50.90, placing fourth directly behind senior teammate Elizabeth Gaspari (50.19).
 
Junior Carlos Vasquez led the men with two third-place finishes in the 100 and 200 fly. His time of 48.58 in the 100 fly was just .20 seconds away from his personal-best, while his swim of 1:47.68 in the 200 fly was just over .70 seconds away from a career-best time.  
 
Both freshman Calvin Wise and Zach Brewer earned a career-best time in their respective events: Wise in the 200 fly (1:51.47) and Brewer in the 200 free (1:41.40). 
 
Junior Sadie Schumann impressed in the 200 free with a fourth place finish (1:49.90).
 
Freshman Zach Brewer earned fourth in the 1000 free with a personal-best time of 9:22.26 on Friday.
 
Freshman Jacob Oberle secured fourth in the 200 back for his time of 1:54.95. 
 
Senior breaststroker Carly Hart swam for a top-five spot in the 100 breast (1:01.89) and in the 200 breast (2:17.12). Nolte also swam in the same race, coming in with a time of 1:15.02.
 
Sophomore Mikey Challis swam a personal-best in the 100 breast to earn a sixth (56.69). 
 
Nittany Lion Relays
The women's 200 medley relay team of Szekely, Hart, Matthias, and Gaspari placed third with a time of 1:41.09 on Friday evening
 
In the 400 free relay on Saturday, the women placed third with a team of Schumann, Gaspari, Stanford, and Camryn Barry (3:21.97).
 
The men's 400 free relay of Henry Radzikowski, Brewer, Vasquez, and Erik Huuki finished fourth with a time of 3:07.78. 
 
Yesterday, the 200 medley relay team of Oberle, Challis, Devon Chenot, and Tommy Hurley earned fifth with their swim of 1:30.47. 
 
Next Up
The team will face Michigan State at home for their Senior Meet to conclude their regular season. The contest is slated for Friday, February 5 to Saturday, February 6 at McCoy Natatorium.
