MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The No. 8 Penn State women's hockey team scored a season-high six goals with two coming from sophomore forward Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) in the Nittany Lions' 6-2 win over Lindenwood in CHA play Friday night.
Weiss added an assist for a career-best three points on the night. Sophomore defender Mallory Uihlein (Edina, Minn) and freshman forward Kiara Zanon (Fairport, N.Y.) also had multi-point nights with a goal and assist each.
Freshman Alyssa Machado (Mississauga, Ontario) netted her first career goal for the Nittany Lions (9-1-1) late in the second period and junior defender Jessica Adolfsson (Linkoping, Sweden) scored PSU's other tally.
Freshman netminder Josie Bothun (Wyoming, Minn.) needed just 17 saves for her ninth win of the season (9-1-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Zanon started the scoring for the Nittany Lions at the 4:34 mark in the first period on a nice read heading to the net. Izzy Heminger (Dublin, Ohio) put a long-range shot on goal and Zanon crashed the middle of the ice towards the net to put in the easy rebound for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Just seconds later, Weiss was hooked up on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. She made a great move to her backhand to chip the puck past Lindenwood goalie Julia Maguire for her first goal of the game, which extended PSU's lead to 2-0 just 4:41 into the game.
Lindenwood (2-7-0) pulled back within one on Megan Wagner's goal at the 14:33 mark in the first, but Penn State got the goal right back at 5:58 in the second period thanks to Uihlein. After pegging the post on her first shot attempt, the puck found its way back to Uihlein whose wrist shot didn't miss the mark a second time for her first goal of the season.
PSU added its fourth goal of the evening with 1:53 left in the second period on Machado's first goal as a Nittany Lion. After a two-on-one rush by Zanon and Natalie Heising (Wayzata, Minn.), Machado came flying of the bench straight for the goal. Heising connected on the pass and Machado lifted the puck on her forehand over Wagner's glove to give Penn State the 4-1 lead.
Lindenwood netted a second goal at 6:14 in the third period off Casey Adimey's stick to bring the Lions back within two, but Penn State wasted little time with a response. Adolfsson walked the puck to the right circle and found a crease with a wrist shot to score for the fourth time this season.
Weiss added her second of the night at the 12:34 mark after speeding all the way down the ice and burying a shot from the right faceoff dot, capping the game at 6-2 for Penn State.
