UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The #6 Penn State women's soccer team (9-1-1, 9-1-1) triumphed 6-0 over the Maryland Terrapins (0-9-2, 0-9-2) on Saturday, April 3. The Nittany Lions scored three goals in each half to secure their ninth win of the year.
Redshirt sophomore Ally Schlegel and senior captain Frankie Tagliaferri each scored two goals in the win. Payton Linnehan and Rachel Wasserman also netted goals in the victory. Tagliaferri finished the match with seven points as she added three assists and Schlegel finished with six points as she also added two assists.
The Nittany Lions honored redshirt senior Kristin Schnurr on Saturday prior to the game. Schnurr tallied an assist in Saturday's win and has been a member of the women's soccer program since 2015.
How It Happened
- Penn State's offense was clicking on all cylinders from the opening whistle. The Nittany Lions got on the board in just the third minute of action as Tagliaferri and Schlegel teamed up to find Linnehan as she lifted her shot over the outstretched hands of the Terrapins keeper to make it 1-0.
- Six minutes later, Tagliaferri scored her first of the game to give Penn State its 2-0 lead.
- Wasserman scored the final goal of the first half in the 17th minute. Linnehan sent a cross through the box and Wasserman blasted her shot into the corner of the net to make it 3-0 Penn State.
- The Nittany Lions outshot Maryland 18-6 in the first half and allowed no easy looks for the Terrapins.
- Immediately out of the half, Schlegel took a pass from Tagliaferri and blasted a left-footed shot into the upper 90 to give the Nittany Lions a 4-0 advantage.
- Three minutes after Schlegel's first goal, Tagliaferri scored her second goal of the match. A pretty combo of passes from Schnurr and Sam Coffey led to an open look for Tagliaferri and she buried her shot into the twine to make it 5-0.
- Schlegel scored for the second time in the 55th minute, sidestepping the Terrapins goalkeeper and curving her shot just inside the far post to give Penn State their final goal of the match and a 6-0 lead.
- Katherine Asman and Katie Evans combined for the shutout in the 6-0 win as Penn State limited Maryland to only two shots on goal.
- The Nittany Lions improved to 9-1-1, 9-1-1 following Saturday's win.
Notes
Penn State improved to 5-0-0 at home this season and 3-0-0 at Jeffrey Field.
The Nittany Lions have allowed just one goal in their last five matches and currently have a scoreless streak of 348 minutes without conceding a goal. The last goal allowed by Penn State was in the 12th minute against Michigan on March 21.
Following Saturday's performance, Penn State now has three players over 20 points this season. (Ally Schlegel - 24, Sam Coffey - 20 and Frankie Tagliaferri - 20).
