UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State senior captains Sam Coffey and Kerry Abello can add another All-America honor to their already impressive resumes. Coffey and Abello were each named 2020-21 Senior CLASS Award Women's Soccer All-Americans announced Wednesday.
The two Nittany Lion captains were among the 10 nominees for the Senior CLASS Award, and made Penn State the only program in women's college soccer with two student-athletes as finalist for the award and to earn All-America honors from the organization.
Coffey was named a Senior CLASS first team All-American and Abello was named a second team All-American.
This is the third All-America honor that Coffey has received in her collegiate career. Coffey earned first team All-America honors from United Soccer Coaches in 2018 and was a United Soccer Coaches second team Scholar All-America in 2019 in her first season in Happy Valley.
Abello is no stranger to earning All-America honors as well. Abello has twice been named a CoSIDA Academic All-American for her outstanding work in the classroom and on the pitch. Abello was named to the Academic All-America first team in 2019 and was a second team honoree in 2018.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character, and competition.
