BARCELONA & OMAHA, Neb. – Penn State men's swimmer Gabe Castano placed fifth in the 50 free with a time of 22.23 at the Pere Serrat Pool in Barcelona in the third and final weekend of the 2021 Mare Nostrum tour. Castano advanced to the A Final after placing third in his prelim Saturday morning (22.29).
Castano owns the Mexican national record, set in April 2019, and Penn State record in the 50 free (LCM). He has the second-best time in Penn State history in the 50 free (SCY), behind only Irish Olympian and former Nittany Lion Shane Ryan. Castano's 19.06 in that event stands sixth on the Big Ten all-time list.
Carly Hart (Canton, Ohio) represented Penn State in the 100 breast at the U.S. Olympic Trials at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska, with a 1:11.83 time in the prelim.
The final day of action for Nittany Lions in Wave I includes Maddie Cooke (Phoenixville, Pennsylvania) and Cat Stanford (Oceanside, New York) who will compete in the 50 free on Monday, June 7.
