No. 12 Women's Soccer Falls 2-1

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 12 Penn State women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Northwestern Wildcats on Thursday evening. Thursday's match was Penn State's first match at home in nearly a month.
 
How it Happened
 
The Wildcats tested keeper Katherine Asman early in the match, tallying the first shot on goal in the 5th minute of action. Asman made the save to keep the match scoreless.
 
The Nittany Lions flipped the field and recorded a pair of shots with Ally Schlegel recording the first shot on goal for the Nittany Lions in the 10th minute.
 
Following a corner kick for the Wildcats, Kaylee Titus of Northwestern sent a nicely placed shot into the bottom corner of the net just passed of the outstretched arms of a diving Asman to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead.
 
In the 22nd minute, Sam Coffey looked to tie the match with a blast from just outside of the 18-yard box. A diving save by the Wildcats keeper denied Penn State's scoring chance.
 
Two minutes later, Cori Dyke with blast on shot on frame that was punched over the crossbar and kept Northwestern ahead 1-0.
 
In the 37th minute, Northwestern added a goal to put the Wildcats in front 2-0 and the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead into the half.
 
Out of the half, Schlegel had the first scoring chance but her shot went just wide of the net as the Nittany Lions looked to cut into the lead.
 
Penn State continued to press the Wildcats defense throughout the second half. With under 10 minutes to play, Kerry Abello found the back of the net for her second goal of the season and brought the score to 2-1.
 
The Nittany Lions were unable to net the game-tying goal and fell to the Wildcats 2-1.
 
Additional Notes
 
On Kerry Abello's goal, Sam Coffey was credited with the assists. With this assist, Coffey recorded her 50th career assist. She moved into a tie for 10th all-time at Penn State with 26 assists as a Nittany Lion.
 
Penn State returns to Jeffrey Field on Sunday to face Ohio State.
