UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A brace by Jordan Canniff led Penn State to a 3-0 win over Indiana on Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions three-goal win improved Penn State's record to 8-0 when scoring at least two goals in a match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn State held the possession for the majority of the first half. This was apparent in the early portions of the match. In the third minute, Ally Schlegel collected a corner kick to her feet and sent a shot on net. This shot was blocked by a Indiana defender and the match remained tied at 0-0.
Penn State continued to maintain the possession and pressure the Indiana back line. The Nittany Lion defense also limited Indiana to just three shots in the first half and just two long shots on goal.
With five minutes remaining in the first half, Elle Kershner sent a ball into the box to Canniff. Canniff blasted her shot into the back of the net to put the Nittany Lions up 1-0.
Out of the half, senior captain Sam Coffey was fouled in the box in the 55th minute. Coffey buried her penalty kick to give the Nittany Lions a two-goal advantage with her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
11 minutes later, Canniff netted her second goal of the game. This time following an assist from Jilly Shimkin.
The Penn State defense allowed just one shot on net in the second half despite the Indiana attempting to press the Nittany Lions.
The Nittany Lions picked up their fourth clean sheet of the season with the 3-0 win.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
Jordan Canniff recorded the first multi-goal game of her career in the victory.
Sam Coffey has now scored four goals in her last two games. With Coffey's PK goal in the win, she is now 5-6 on converting penalty kick goals in her Penn State career.
Coffey now has 21 points on the season, this marks the fifth straight season she has recorded at least 20 points in her career. Her two points in Wednesday's match increased her lead as the NCAA active leader in points to 135 career points.
Head coach Erica Dambach collected her 280th win of her career and her 240th as Penn State's head coach with Wednesday's win.
The Nittany Lions improved to 28-1-2 all-time against Indiana.
