UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Lady Lions put together a record-breaking performance Tuesday evening against Delaware State, scoring a school record 120 points highlighted by Makenna Marisa's 30-point, 11-assist, 10-steal triple-double to top the Hornets, 120-51, at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Marisa became the first Lady Lion since Suzie McConnell in 1988 to record a triple double. McConnell had seven in her legendary Penn State career from 1985-88.
The Lady Lion topped its single-game points record of 118, previously done three times, the last being Dec. 29, 1993 against Morgan State.
Penn State (3-0) begins the season with three-straight wins for the second-straight season, the first time accomplishing that feat since 2009-10 and 2010-11. Penn State also topped 80 points in each of its first three games for the first time since 2017-18.
Marisa's career-high 30 points, on 12-of-16 shooting, led the Lady Lions. She contributed 11 of Penn State's program-record 37 assists and 10 of its Bryce Jordan Center-record 25 steals. Niya Beverley and Tova Sabel each scored 17, while Anna Camden had 14 and Shay Hagans had 12. Penn State assisted on 37 of its 50 made field goals, both program-record marks as well as 89 field-goal attempts. The Lady Lions shot 56 percent from the field and were above 50 percent in each quarter. Penn State hit 13-of-29 three-point attempts.
After a back-and-forth first few minutes, the Lady Lions used an 11-0 run in the middle of the first quarter to take control. Three different Lady Lions drilled three pointers in run, including Anna Camden, Marisa and Tova Sabel plus a layup on the fastbreak by Niya Beverley.
Penn State led by nine, 24-15, at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Lions shot 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) in the quarter led by Camden with seven points on three-of-three shooting.
The Lady Lions also sported an active defense throughout the evening and forced the Hornets to give up the basketball on several occasions. DSU turned the ball over 21 times in the first half with the Lady Lions' snagging 13 steals.
It took DSU almost half the quarter to put the ball in the basket because of the defense, and Penn State's offense scored 13 points prior to the Hornet's first basket of the second quarter. The Lady Lion's ended up outscoring the Hornets 32-6 in the quarter to lead 56-21 at halftime.
The Lady Lions continued to pour in the baskets in the second half with 35 more points in the third quarter and 29 more in the fourth with Maddie Burke's layup in the final minute breaking the scoring record for the Lady Lions.
Penn State travels to Clemson for its first road matchup of the season on Sunday, November 21. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on the ACC Network.
