UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Eleven Penn State track and field student-athletes are set to compete in the final round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships held in Eugene, Oregon from June 8 to June 11.
The men's team will be represented by Tyler Merkley in the hammer throw and the 4x400m relay team of James Onwuka, Korbin Martino, Savion Hebron, Olivier Desmeules and alternate Darius Smallwood. Five Nittany Lion women will compete, including Madison Smith in javelin, Yasmin Brooks in 100m hurdles, Mallory Kauffman in shot put, and Rachel Gearing and Victoria Tachinski in the 800m run. A LOOK BACK
The Nittany Lions concluded the NCAA East Preliminary round held from Wednesday, May 25th, to Saturday, May 28th, with 11 student-athletes qualifying for the Championships, the most the program has seen since the 2018 season.
Tyler Merkley clinched the first qualification spot on Wednesday by winning the men's hammer throw with a mark of 70.79m (232-3).
Thursday saw the duo of Madison Smith and Mallory Kauffman both earn their qualifying spots after placing tenth and 11th in javelin and shot put, respectively.
Five Nittany Lions qualified on Friday when the men's 4x400m relay team ran the seventh-fastest time in program history to advance to Eugene. The relay team was originally seeded dead last among the field of 24 teams in the race.
Penn State finished the weekend with three qualifiers on the last day of competition on Saturday. Yasmin Brooks earned an automatic qualifier in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.21. In the 800m, Rachel Gearing clinched with an automatic qualifier of her own with a time of 2:03.72 and Victoria Tachinski clocked a new outdoor personal-best time of 2:03.72 to qualify on time.
