UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A pair of Penn State women's hockey seniors hit their 100th career game together on Monday afternoon's win against non-conference opponent, Franklin Pierce.
Senior captain Mallory Uihlein and fellow senior Julie Gough both played in their 100th career NCAA game in a Penn State uniform in the Nittany Lions fifth win on the season. Uihlein tallied an assist while Gough punched in a goal and an assist in the 4-1 series clinching win.
"It was really exciting we got to do it together," Uihlein said following the series sweep.
Uihlein started her career as a Nittany Lion with a bang as she was named to the 2020 CHA All-Rookie team after skating in all 36 games and recording 11 points on the season.
The Edina, Minnesota native tallied 10 points in her sophomore season with one goal and nine assists. She posted a plus-10 rating to wrap up her second year in Hockey Valley.
Uihlein exploded for a record-breaking performance in the 2021-22 season. She led the Lions defensive effort by setting the Penn State defender single season record with 19 points on six goals and 13 assists.
She ended the season ranking fifth among defenders in program history in points with 39 of them and nabbed an All-CHA First Team honor while she was at it.
"It's crazy seeing how much our teams have progressed every single year, it's really special," Uihlein said.
While Uihlein held down the blueline these past 100 games, Gough handled the offensive end.
Hailing from Newcastle, Ontario, Gough made her freshmen debut by scoring Penn State's first goal of the season against non-conference opponent, Holy Cross. Gough finished the 2019-20 season with six points on three goals and three assists after skating in all 36 games.
Gough turned it up her sophomore season, emerging as a key contributor to the Nittany Lions offensive unit with 11 goals and eight assists in all 21 games. She became the sixth Nittany Lion to ever record a hat trick in Penn State's regular-season championship clinching win.
In her junior season, Gough tied a program record with a seven-game goal scoring streak and led the team with five power-play goals. She ended the 2021-22 season with 16 points with 10 goals and six assists.
"It's been three years, this is our fourth, and a big milestone to hit. It's cool we could do it together," Gough said.
So far, the pair's senior season is off to a hot start. Uihlein and Gough have combined for three goals and seven assists as they head into conference play on Friday.
"This team is really special and we can do something amazing with the people we have, so it's a great feeling," Gough explained.
Jeff Kampersal has been Uihlein and Gough's head coach all four years at Penn State and had nothing but the utmost positive things to say about the pair.
"Julie and Mal are excellent representatives of Penn State Hockey. They are role-models who put the team first," Kampersal said. "They lead and they compete. I am grateful to have spent all 100 games with them and for the positive impact they continue to make within our program."
The 5-4-1 Nittany Lions will travel to Missouri on Friday, Oct. 28 to kick off conference play against Lindenwood.
