No. 12/12 Women's Hockey Set for Henderson Collegiate Hockey Showcase

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The No. 12/12 Penn State women's ice hockey team heads to Las Vegas to play in the Henderson Collegiate Hockey Showcase on Friday. The Nittany Lions open play against No. 3/3 ranked Minnesota at 7 p.m. ET.

HISTORY

  • This will be the fourth time Minnesota and Penn State have met with the Golden Gophers leading the series 3-0. The last time they faced each other came on Oct. 2, 2015, where Penn State fell 5-0.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GOPHERS

  • Minnesota has eight players on the team that have scored at least five goals this season. Meanwhile, two have recorded double-digit assists.
  • The Golden Gophers enter the matchup with a 9-2-2 overall record and a 9-1-2 record in the WCHA. They are coming off a loss and tie to Wisconsin that came on Nov. 19-20. 
  • Leading the Golden Gophers on offense is Grace Zumwinkle who tallies 19 points with eight goals and 11 assists.
  • Between the pipes stands Skyler Vetter who has a 7-2-2 record, GAA of 2.28 and a save percentage of .916. 

TIP OF THE HAT (TRICK)

  • Senior forward Courtney Correia is the third Nittany Lion in program history to record multiple hat tricks in a season.
  • She's tallied two so far that both came in October against St. Lawrence and Lindenwood.
  • On the season, Correia tallies seven goals and seven assists for 14 points.

1500 AND COUNTING

  • Junior goalie Josie Bothun hit the 1500 career save mark in Friday's match up against Yale.
  • She currently tallies 1534 in her career. Bothun is the fourth goalie in program history to hit the 1500 mark.
  • The Wyoming, Minn. native has tallied 395 saves so far this season.
  • She sits tied for fifth in the nation in total saves.

WALLIN IS ALWAYS A PLUS

  • Junior Olivia Wallin leads the team in +/- which is +13 on the year.
  • She ranks tied for 28th in the nation in that category.
  • This season, Wallin has tallied five goals alongside eight assists and sits tied for third on the team in points with 13.

FACE-OFF MACHINES

  • Penn State continues to dominate the face-off circle.
  • On the season, Penn State tallies a face-off win percentage of 54.9% which ranks seventh in the nation.
  • Leading the charge is freshman Tessa Janecke as she has won 193 face-offs.

SITTING ON TOP OF THE POLLS

  • Penn State has been ranked in the top 15 in the USA Today/USA Hockey national polls for nine of the ten weeks this year.
  • The Nittany Lions dropped one slot in USCHO poll from #11 to #12.
